The Vaud region
The region is in the French speaking part of the Swiss Alps. In winter, the Lake Geneva region and the mountains are popular with skiers, walkers and cross country skiers enjoying the sunshine and breathtaking scenery. In summer, contemplate the everchanging colours of lofty alpine pastures, the charm of the high mountain lakes and streams, the breathtaking spectacle of the wonders of nature, lush and vibrant. The extraordinary hiking trails will allow you to explore and picnic in one of the largest nature reserves in Switzerland.
Situated at 1300 metres in the heart of a majestic panorama overlooking the Rhone valley, facing the Dents du Midi and the Muverans mountain chain, Villars is an all year round exclusive and family orientated resort and offers its guests an inspiring view of the Alps, enjoying a micro climate of its own resulting in lots of sunshine throughout the year. The village is small and compact with no high rise blocks, shops and restaurants to suit most pockets and with a choice of bars and clubs for an enjoyable night life. There are three indoor and many outdoor tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, ice skating rink, bowling alley and a cinema.
For ski-ing and snowboarding, access to the slopes at Bretaye and beyond is either from the Telecabine Roc d'Orsay or the vehicular Bretaye train from the bus/train station in the centre. There are 71 ski-lifts and 225 kms of marked slopes in the interconnecting Villars Glacier3000 area with all year round skiing plus 44 kms of cross country ski trails and snow shoe paths. There are two well known ski schools for instruction and guides and children under 9 are given free ski passes. There is an all day crèche and an adjacent nursery lift for the young ones. Other well known ski resorts nearby are Verbier (45 minutes), Les Portes du Soleil (45 minutes) and Gstaad (1 hour)
In summer there are more than 300 kms of marked walking trails to numerous small alpine hamlets and 130 kms of all terrain bicycle trails. There are two golf courses within 30 minutes, several adventure parks nearby, horse riding, paragliding, rock climbing to mention just some of the attrractions.
Nearby, are numerous interesting attractions to suit most tastes, Montreux and the Jazz festival, Martigny with its Gallo-Roman remains and many cultural events, Vevey, Lausanne and Geneva for shopping with the French border (45 minutes by car) and the Italian cities of Turin and Milan a comfortable drive away.

This is a very nice place to be ! Isy and Hew are very friendly. It was a real pleasure to meet them ! The chalet is very cosy. In the winter, don't forget your snow tyres and chains to reach the chalet. I didn't find my way, I phoned Hew and we had a meeting point to reach safely the chalet. It's a very quiet place, you hear the silence into the night. It was a very great moment and a lot of snow ! Villars is a very charming place. Isy and Hew, thanks a lot for all

"Fabulous - wonderful hosts!"
We had a wonderful stay at the chalet. It started on arrival when we met Hew and Issy. Not only were the usual coffee, tea etc provided, there were bacon and eggs, a bottle of champagne and a home made bolognese ready for dinner so we didn't have to go out and find food. (Sorry Issy, now you have to make a spag bol for every guest!) Hew gave us a tour of the town in his car so we could see the best way to get around and where everything was. The chalet was wonderful - very well furnished; spotlessly clean, comfy beds, lots of DVD's, candles - everything we needed to make ourselves at home. We were able to use the washing machine and drier in the laundry which was a big help to get things clean before returning to Australia. The chalet is a little bit out of town, however unless you want to party late every night in town this is a plus as it is surrounded by lovely scenery and makes for a cosy place to stay in the evenings. We had lots of snow and great skiing. Villars is a nice town, compact and easy to walk around. Skiing is varied with a free nursery slope with lifts which was useful for our children on the first couple of days before we took them up to the main ski area. I think a car would be beneficial if staying at the chalet as it is about 25 mins walk from town. There is a local bus and I am sure Hew would collect guests from the station, however a car would make things easier. If you are there in winter, please make sure you have snow tyres/4x4/snow chains in case there is a lot of snow as the roads are a bit tricky if you are not used to driving in snow and have an unfamiliar rental car. Hew and Issy had no problems, obviously just we Austrailans who don't normally face icy roads! So thanks for a lovely stay - we definitely recommend your wonderful house and hospitality.
