The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region

The Limousin is an area of outstanding natural beauty, of chestnut trees, woodlands and lakes. There is fantastic walking in the area, fishing and lakes with beaches. Historical towns include Limoges, the home of porcelain, and Chalus where Richard the Lionheart died after returning from the Crusades in 13///. Pretty towns and villages abound with the house being on the border of the dordogne and the charente.
The Limousin is also famous for its food - the home of the world famous limousin beef, goats cheese, duck, chestnuts and foie gras to name a few. The climate is almost perfect, hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The charente area has the second highest sunshine levels in the whole of France and the house benefits from these being only 10 minutes from the charente border.
The Cheronnac area
The two nearest towns to the house are Rochechouart and St. Matthieu, both a 10 to 15 minute drive. Rochechouart has all the shops you would expect (cheesemongers, butchers, bakers, patisserie, cafe and restaurants) in a beautiful hill top setting complete with chateau at which Richard the Lionheart is reputed to have stayed. A fabulous night market is held here every August.
St Matthieu is a smaller town but has the best supermarket in the area and during the summer months hosts a wonderful night market every fortnight where local produce can be bought, and a communal barbecue takes place with live music. There is also a beautiful lake with a beach and other activities (crazy golf, pedaloes, running track) if you get bored with the pool at the house with an on site cafe/restaurant. Another lake with a beach close to the house can be found at Videix - a short drive or slightly longer cycle ride away.
The best market in the area is at Piegut every wednesday morning, a 20 minute drive.
Within easy distance is Brantome, a beautiful town known as the Venice of the Perigord where canoeing is a very popular activity. Also every summer there is a music festival drawing groups from all over the world to the town of Confolens, 30 minutes away.
Other activities within 15 minutes include an adventure park at Massignac, and two lakes with boating, swimming and cafes. There is a riding school 20 minutes away and a great go karting circuit within 30 minutes. Large towns worth a visit are Limoges and Angouleme both with beautiful old quarters, reasonable shopping and Angouleme hosts a classic car race every September.

Guestbook for La Feranchie
"Totally relaxing but plenty to do"
"this is a beautiful house to totally relax in"
"the house and pool area are stunning"
"We travel to France every year and so have stayed in many houses, always owned by Brits and must admit La Feranchie was one of the best we have stayed in. It is extremely well equipped and the standard of bed linen, towels etc was good. We usually have little things we can comment on but couldn't fault La Feranchie. We were 2 families staying together and it was perfect for us. A lovely area to walk in. We would definitely recommend it to others"
