The Welsh Gatehouse
£475–£720 / week
About the home
A luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, (we think it was built approx 1270). This Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a fairy tale castle.
Stay from 1 night to 2 weeks. It is cheaper the longer you stay. Please contact us for further information on availability and prices.
Extensively refurbished in 2008, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform!
Heating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood burning stove.
The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need it.
TV with freeview, DVD player, CD player with ipod docking facility.
Please note, this ancient building's charm includes a steep spiral staircase. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large case...as the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted.
Outside
The property is self contained, and has its own entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live at the other end of the garden in a sixteenth century Monmouthshire gentry house.
AWARD WINNING PROPERTY
On 26 June 2009 William Ayot was presented with an award for building conservation for the works done at Moynes Court at the Gatehouse and Courtyard House. The Award was presented by the Village Alive Trust in association with CADW and the Welsh Civic Trust

CAERLEON ROMAN FORTRESS
Caerleon was the site of one of Britain's three permanent Roman Legionary Fortresses and many believe it to be the location of King Arthur's Camelot. In 830 AD Nennius listed Cair Lion as one of Britain's 33 cities. Nowadays it's a thriving town where past and present combine to delight both visitors and residents.

SEVERN BORE
A curious phenomenon associated with the lower reaches of the Severn is the tidal phenomenon known as the Severn Bore . The river's estuary , part of the Bristol Channel , has the second largest tidal range in the world which is approximately 15 metres , exceeded only (couple of feet) by the Bay of Fundy in Canada - and at certain combinations of the tides, the rising water is funneled up the estuary into a wave that travels rapidly upstream against the river current.
The bore travels a distance of approximately 25 miles between Awre and Gloucester. Severn Bore enthusiasts even attempt to surf along on the bore wave, which can be 2 m high. Being the onset of the flood tide it is accompanied by a rapid rise in water level which continues for about one and a half hours after the Severn Bore has passed.

The Welsh Gatehouse is the perfect place to go for a peaceful getaway. We loved our trip and can definitely recommend it. The building itself is incredible, the spiral staircase, log fire and... more |

We had a fantastic and really memorable stay. To say that it is unique is just not doing it justice, as it is sooooo romantic and so cosy that we would love to be there every weekend. We had intended to do lot's of sightseeing, but we found it hard to tear ourselves away from the place. The stairs up are different, but what do you expect in what is a property / castle built over 500 years ago! Highly recommend visiting Tintern Abbey, the other side of Chepstow. |

We stayed at The Gatehouse for a few days for our anniversary in October 2011. It was wonderful, so cosy, warm, extremely comfortable and a wonderful get away from it all. We were impressed by the open fire which was already lit when we arrived, and the welcome basket was a really nice touch we weren't expecting. Lovely and quiet, the only noise to be heard was the animals in the nearby field. Will be recommending to anyone who asks us, a real find!!!!!! |
