About this location
The Limousin region
Limousin is one of the main regions of France, made up of three departments. The area remains rural, with more villages and hamlets than major cities. The historic town of Limoges is worth a visit, not just for the porcelain shops and the museum devoted to the industry that made it famous, but also for the 12th century cathedral and the narrow, winding cobbled streets.
The department of Creuse is located in the middle of France, right among the impressive mountains of the Massif Central, and named after the river that runs through the region. The town of Aubusson is famous throughout Europe for the tapestries that have been made there through the centuries, many of which now hang in palaces and museums in major cities.
If you're a fan of water sports, hiking or just relaxing on the beach, then you shouldn't miss a trip to Lake Vassiviere, one of France's largest lakes at just over 1000 hectares in area. There are three locations for organised boat trips around the edge of the lake or you can hire your own boat from Auphelle.
On 10 June 1944, the idylic French village of Oradour-sur-Glane was completely destroyed and 642 innocent men, women and
children were massacred by soldiers in Hitler's elite Waffen-SS army. The ruins of the martyred village have been preserved as a reminder of nazi barbarity.
Chénérailles has a large forest where there is , tennis courts, a fishing lake and a large area of water with a beach, set aside for public swimming. There are many paths in the forest, including a health trail where wooden 'gymnastic' equipment is placed at intervals for the more athletic walkers to enjoy.
Since Roman times Chénérailles has been at an important crossroads in Central France, and as such it provides an excellent base for exploring the area by car or bicycle. It has an attractive medieval heart, once surrounded by stout walls, which was often fought over and besieged during the medieval wars which plagued the country. Aerial photographs clearly show the original oval-shaped settlement and moat. Within easy reach are the picturesque towns of Boussac, Mainsat, Chambon-sur-Voueize and Ahun - and the local beautifully-restored château of Villemonteix with its fairy-tale turrets and magnificent tapestries is a 'must-see'.
Gouzon Golf Club
Set in 120 ha of open countryside alongside the N145 at Gouzon, and accessed from the Boussac road, the Golf-Club de La Jonchère's main course has 18 holes (5960 m) and is rated par 72. It also has a 9 hole pitch and putt course and a training area. Fishing is also catered for on site.
