About this location

The Poitou-Charentes region

This region boasts the best sunshine record in France outside the Mediteranean.

Sandy Beaches, golden sunflower fields, elegant chateaux, pretty villages, markets, historic towns and festivals are all worth visiting and seeing, not to mention relaxing around the pool with a cool drink.

It is full of things to do. eg. cycling, walking, watersports, riding, birdwatching.

The restaurants serve great local specialities like cognac, pineau, mussels, fresh fish seafood platters.

The oysters at Marenne-Oleron are famous worldwide and are sought after all over France.

The famous winehouses of Bordeaux and St Emilion are a must to visit.

Whatever your preferences there is something for everyone in this beautiful area of France

Les Rimaudieres is a tranquil hamlet set amidst sunflower fields and vines.

Chenac is the nearest village which is famous for its Pineau De Charente.

There is a marina at Mortagne sur Gironde 2.5 kms away which is a port on the estuary of the Gironde with 4 restaurants and shops.

Just past Mortagne on the road to Port Maubert there is a haven for birdwatchers because in Spring and Summer it becomes home to many storks who build their nests on wooden platforms.

For the Walker

There are many lanes and footpaths which work their way through vines and sunflowers.

At Mortagne there are many paths which follow the estuary, which are rich in flowers and plantlife.

There are many walks around the cliffs on the coast.

One of them is at Barzan where recently they have found an old Roman City La Faa this is a lovely cliff walk to the pretty village of Talmont. Talmont is famous for the craft shops and Hollyhocks which are abundant in the area.

These country lanes are also good for the runner.

For the Cylist

The quiet lanes around Chenac are good for the cyclist.

The bike ride from Les Rimaudieres to the bakers at Mortagne is just far enough to take the morning excercise. As you cycle back with your freshly baked bread and croissants you take in the lovely views of the estuary.

There are 8 bikes at Les Rimaudieres which can be used and there are plenty of nearby places to hire them.

At St George de Didonne and Royan there is a cycle track which follows the promenade. There is also a cycle track from Vaux sur Mer to La Palmyre which follows the cliffs and forest tracks.

For the Fisherman

At Meshers and Royan there are boat trips to take people out for seafishing. There are lakes which cater for Carp and Trout fishing nearby.

There is also fishing in the River Charente which is full of trout, pike, perch.

For the Birdwatcher

This area attracts many different birds. It has been mentioned earlier about the storks but there are many birds of prey. The Black and Red Kite, Buzzards are a familiar spotting as well as the Hoopoo.

The cottages at Les Rimaudieres are named after the local birds, Le Faucon- the Falcon, Les Hirondelles- the swallows who come everyday to visit the pool for a drink. La Pie Qui Chante which I think is the humble Magpie but sounds quite good in french.

For the Surfer

There are many beaches just past Royan which are all good for the surfer. At Royan it is easy to hire a surfboard for a day or week

For the Water Sports

At St George de Didonne and Royan boats can be hired and these are good beaches for windsurfing.

At Saintes or Tailleborg which are on River Charente you can hire riverboats and Pedeloes.

For the Wine Enthusiast

There are many local vineyards which offer winetastings of some excellent wines, cognac and Pineau at reasonable prices. Whether it be to enhance your holiday or to take home to remind you of the sun after your holiday.

A trip to St Emilion is well worth the visit.

The ferry goes from Royan or Blaye to the Medoc where you can visit the many finest winehouses and taste their Premier Cru.

The Nearby Beaches

The nearest beach is Plage de Nonne at Meschers. This is a lovely sandy beach ideal for children. It is a cove and hosts 2 bars one is an unusual jazz bar called Tinas which is worth a visit. I am not saying that you may spot an old guitarist from Queen but you never know. This can be found on the coast road to Royan and along this road there are a number of coves until you reach the sandy beaches of St George de Didonne and Royan. There you can hire the blue and white tents and during the Summer months there is always activities for children eg Micky Mouse Club

"A great place for a family holiday"

We were delighted with our 4 bed gite which was spacious and airy, well equipped and spotlessly clean. Although the 3 gites are adjacent to each other, strategically placed trellis and planting gives … More

"Fabulous Accomodation in a Perfect Setting"

The cottages are in a stunning location and are furnished and equipped to a really high standard. The one we were in was scrupulously clean with good quality bed linen, crockery and cutlery. We flew to Bordeaux and picked up a car from there. it was an easy drive of about an hour with good directions from the owners. The location is fabulous as its easy to visit the wine regions, cycle along the quiet roads, or visit nearby Royan and La Rochelle. (There are bikes to use there already). Relaxing by the pool was an added bonus, as was cycling to the little village nearby for bread each morning. The cottages are ideal if you want to cook for yourself and there is a gas barbecue outside on the patio. The owners were really helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone.
