The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
There is much to do and see in the Local area, as Cheltenham is centrally situated between some major attractions in the British Isles. Oxford to the South East is home to the most famous University in the world, and a visit to the Colleges and Museums there is a must. Stratford to the North is the birthplace of Shakespeare, the most famous playwright in the world, and visitors can still see his wife's cottage in the town there, and the Royal Shakespeare Company has their base there, and through the season, many great plays can be seen.
To the South is Bristol, once a huge centre of British Commerce, and for 500 years the second city of England behind London. Nowadays it is known for the aerospace industry and the city centre docks have been regenerated as a centre of heritage and culture.
The Cotswolds region is an area of England popular with both the English themselves and all visitors. The Cotswolds are well-known for rolling countryside, gentle hillsides (‘wolds’) and sleepy 'typically English' villages.
Cheltenham area
Cheltenham, known as the centre of The Cotswolds, is England's most complete Regency Spa town. Famous for its racecourse and The Gold Cup, it also offers superb shopping facilities and hosts an impressive variety of festivals and other events.
Nearby attractions include the Pittville Pump Room, The Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe and the Painswick Rococo Gardens. Guided walking tours take in the best of Cheltenham's Regency architecture or you could, of course, spend a day at the races.
How to get there
Cheltenham is well served by Bristol Airport, and you can get flights there from almost anywhere in the UK, or via a major terminus from elsewhere.
Otherwise trains serve well to Cheltenham Spa or it is very easy to drive from anywhere in the UK.
From East (M40/A40) Take the A40 into Cheltenham (The London Road). As you approach the centre take the left hand turn signposted General Hospital (Sandford Mill Road). At this end of this road turn right onto the Old Bath Road and you will find The Garden Flat on the left hand side under 21 Old Bath Road. (Parking is to the rear).
From South West & Midlands (M5) Exit the M5 at Junction 11 and take the A40 into Cheltenham. As you approach the centre of Cheltenham you will arrive at a roundabout with a petrol station in the centre of it. Take the right hand fork down Andover Road and go straight over the lights passing Cheltenham College on your left. At the next roundabout turn left onto the Old Bath Road. Cross the next mini roundabout and you will find The Garden Flat on the left hand side under 21 Old Bath Road. (Parking is to the rear).
