Easily accessible, Somerset enjoys numerous areas of interest for tourists and is well suited for a seaside or touring holiday. Easily accessible via the M5 motorway and Bristol International Airport, Somerset is an ideal base for tourers wishing to explore the West Country, with the surrounding counties of Devon, Gloucester and Wiltshire providing further tourist attractions.
With a wealth of glorious countryside, Somerset provides an ideal location for those wishing to enjoy a more sedate break and enjoys fantastic walks and mountain bike trails. Home to the world famous Cheddar Gorge, Somerset also boasts the UK's smallest city of Wells, with its breathtaking cathedral, Bath, famed for its Roman baths and Glastonbury Tor and Abbey, all of which are easily accessible from The Cottage.
Further attractions include the city of Bristol, perfect for shopping, the seaside resort of Weston Super Mare and Blagdon and Chew Valley Lakes, ideal for walking, sailing and fishing.
Cheddar / Shipham area
Excellent walking in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Cottage is well placed enabling easy access on the Mendip Hills, offering amazing, far reaching views. The area is popular with walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders and cavers alike.
Alternatively, other areas of local interest include the world famous Cheddar Gorge and caves, Wookey Hole, The UK's smallest city of Wells and its breathtaking cathedral and Glastonbury Tor and Abbey, all of which are within a 40 minute car journey away. The seaside resort of Weston Super Mare is just a 15 minute drive away.
A five minute drive from the cottage is The Avon Ski Centre. Featuring a dry ski slope, offering a course for beginners, or a more serious challenge for the more able and adventurous! Other outdoor pursuits include 4 x 4 driving, quad biking, archery and rock climbing.
Cheddar Caves and Gorge are a 10-15 minute drive away. A major tourist attraction, Cheddar is home to cheddar cheese and the world famous Cheddar Man, Britain oldest complete skeleton. Well worth a visit!
To enjoy Britain most spectacular underground caverns, visit Wookey Hole. With its new KING KONG and the Valley of the dinosaurs attraction now open, visitors can wonder through the valley of the dinosaurs, featuring over 20 life size dinosaurs! Alternatively, the nostalgic visitor can enjoy the heyday of the Great British Seaside Holiday. With the largest collection of original Edwardian Penny arcades, visitors can play them with real old pennies.
For those aspiring Tiger Woods tourists, there are several local golf courses, all within easy reach. Mendip Spring golf club is just a 10 minute drive away. Benefits include a fabulous setting on well maintained and manicured parkland turf.
Horse riding is available at nearby local stables, either instructional or hacking up onto the Mendip Hills. A small, friendly yard accomodating the requirements of both beginners and the more experienced rider alike.
Within 10 minutes walk of The Cottage is Shipham Village, with its pub, small shop and butchers. For a wider selection of shops, the Village of Winscombe provides a good selection of banks, local stores and takeaways and is conveniently and easily accessed via car or on foot.
The Star Inn, opposite the property provides good food and a superb carvery and offers good value for money. However, for a real taste of Somerset, try the Swan Inn at Rowberrow. Created from three miners cottages, the pub has been around since the late 1700s and started its life as a cider house. Home-made food served 7 days a week and with local thatchers cider brands available, a visit to the Inn is highly recommended.
