The West Country / Somerset region

Somerset is ideally located for a relaxing countryside, seaside or touring holiday. It is easily reached by air (Bristol Airport 15km) and road (A38, M5) – London being only about 2½ hours drive away. Because of it’s good road network it is an ideal base for touring the west or south of England – the surrounding counties of Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire all have a wealth of beautiful countryside and tourist attractions.
Somerset boasts a wide variety of countryside from the rugged hills and forests of the Mendips, Quantocks and Blackdown , ideal for walking, mountain biking and riding; to the flat moorlands and waterways of the Somerset levels, which are perfect for fishing, bird watching and cycling.
Somerset cities include the smallest City in England, Wells, with it’s magnificent cathedral, the bustling city of Bristol with it’s excellent shopping centres and famous suspension bridge and SS Great Britain, to the Regency City of Bath with it’s beautiful stone buildings and Roman baths. Other nearby attractions include Longleat Safari Park, Glastonbury Tor and Abbey, Blagdon and Chew Valley lakes (sailing, fishing, walking), Street shopping village (35 min drive) and Weston super Mare for shopping and seaside.
The Cheddar / Shipham area
Shipham is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is perfect for walking being located on the West Mendip Way and linked by miles of footpaths - some through tranquil meadows and forest paths and others rugged and wild taking you to the highest point of the Mendips at Beacon Batch. The area is popular with walkers, riders, mountain bikers and cavers.
Within 5 minutes walk of Stable Loft is Shipham village with it's Pub, local hotel and restaurant, and butchers, where you can also buy newspapers , provisions and homemade pies and cakes. The excellent new village hall hosts many social and sports events and is home to the Post Office on two days a week. In the village square is Lennies a tiny (2 tables ) cafe where you can sit and have afternoon tea on the village green, or a short walk up Cuck Hill brings you to Lillypool Cafe and Cheese and Cider Farm where you can sample the local produce. For a larger selection of shops including banks, supermarkets and gift shops, try Winscombe or Cheddar , the home of Cheddar cheese (both about 5 mins drive).
Horse riding is available from our own stables - either instructional lessons or hacking through Rowberrow Forest and onto the Mendips. Other outdoor pursuits including dry slope skiing are available at High Action (5 mins drive), and there are numerous golf courses within easy reach. If you enjoy fishing there is coarse, fly and sea fishing available . A trip to Cheddar Gorge to see the world famous caves and perhaps try your hand at potholing, is well worth the visit, whilst Wookey Hole has breathtaking caves with it’s very own witch, dinosaur valley and a Victorian paper mill among other attractions.
