The Koh Samui region
Koh Samui is Thailand's third largest island lies 60 km from the mainland in the Gulf of Thailand. 21 km long and 25 km wide, Samui was first discovered by backpackers in the 1970's and much of the island is still covered by lush tropical rainforest and coconut plantations. It's part of the Ang Thong (Golden Bowl) Marine National Park which encompasses 80 mostly uninhabited islands.
Recent developments, including luxury resorts, health spas, four international hospitals, an international airport, banks, restaurants and golf courses, have made Koh Samui is the destination of choice for more than 1 million tourists each year.
The Chaweng Beach area
Chaweng beach is Koh Samui's most popular beach. It's on the east coast of the island and has hotels, bungalows, restaurants, shops and beach bars scattered between the palm trees along the seven kilometre stretch of sand.
central Chaweng area is the island's largest town and has the biggest selection of nightlife venues. Food lovers will be in their element in Chaweng with every taste catered for from Thai to Western with some delicious seafood restaurants right on the beach.
The wide bay has been the focal point for the development of the island's tourism industry and the majestic seven kilometer long crescent is bordered by rocky headlands on either end, with an offshore reef and the tiny island of Koh Matlam to the North.
Over the past twenty years, Chaweng Beach has been transformed from a near deserted tropical bay, inhabited by a handful of fishermen and visited by a few adventurous backpackers, into a vibrant, busy, cosmopolitan resort town.
This is undoubtedly the most popular tourist area on Koh Samui, and with its 7-kilometre white-sand beach, water sports, entertainment venues and shopping facilities, as well as a fabulous range of dining options, it is easy to see the attraction.
Accommodation ranges from a few remaining backpacker bungalows, which are nevertheless considerably more expensive than elsewhere on the island, to five star Hotels & Resorts. Given the amount of bungalows, resorts and hotels jammed along the beach, it comes as a pleasant surprise that the beach itself isn't usually packed with people. Obviously it's a lot busier than anywhere else on the island, but getting a sun-lounger and a reasonable degree of privacy isn't a problem.
Please note: If you are intending to accommodate your self and spend most of your evenings in the centre of Chaweng but prefer peace and quietness' at your hotel, it's advised to choose accommodation to northern and southern ends of Chaweng Beach road. In the centre of Chaweng, the party and music can go on until early morning.
The Koh Samui region
Thailand's climate is tropical. High in both temperature and humidity and most people find it very pleasant. The average temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius, or 86 degrees Fahrenheit.Chaweng Beach is the most famous and the longest beach on Koh Samui island. It has very clear water and very smooth sand. There are plenty of bars, shops, restaurants, discotheques and other. It is the main tourist centre and nightlife area. Most resorts and hotels are located here. One of them is the Seascape Beach Resort, which is located just near the Chaweng Beach.
The beach is about five kilometres long. It is bordered by rocky headlands on either end, with an offshore reef and the tiny island of Koh Matlam to the North. You can take a walk from one end to the other end of the beach. The Chaweng Beach offers very great swimming and plenty of water sports and dining options. As the sun goes down, many of restaurants put out tables on the sand. There is a very romantic ambience when they light up candles and fairy lights. From water sports you will find many places that rent catamarans, jet skis, kayaks, banana boats and other. You can have an affordable massage right on the beach, which is one of the great luxury for tourists. Most of the beach masseurs offer Thai or oil massages and also aloe vera body wraps for those that overdosed the sun. Lots of vendors patrol Chaweng beach selling fruit, ice creams, fruit, cold drinks, sarongs, jewelry, grilled sweetcorn or chicken and Thai papaya salad and other. They also offer services as pedicures, hair braiding and tattoos. The vendors are not too persistent and mostly polite. They often come from Thailand's poor northeastern provinces. The Chaweng Beach is not the most peaceful or secluded of Koh Samui's beaches, but everything one can desire is within a few metres.
