The Burgundy region

The village of Laignes, dating back to the 7th century, is surrounded by the forests of the Chatillonnaise, great walking and cycling country. Supermarket, Bakeries, a pharmacy, a bank, a bar and Gourmet Food and Wine shop in the village, plus a small cinema. The village shops are open until 7pm and Sunday mornings. You are close to the Route de Crémant where Burgundy's sparkling wine is produced (we will leave you a nice chilled bottle in the fridge as a welcome gift!) using the same method and grape as champagne, but on the Burgundy side of the border. The nearest Crémant village is 4 Kms away where there is also a lake and horse riding.

The champagne trail starts about 20 Kms from Laignes. Nearest large town is Chatillon-sur-Seine (15 mins) with its many cafés, restaurants, small speciality shops, some large supermarkets, medical services and hospital. Further afield: Chablis (47 Kms), Troyes (68 Kms), Dijon (87 Kms), Beaune (124 Kms).

Châteaux and historical sites in the area eg: Château d'Ancy-le-Franc, UNESCO world heritage sites Abbaye de Fontenay near Montbard and the Basilica of St Magdelene at Vézelay, the new MuséoParc Alésia at Alise St Reine, medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois and the medieval hill-top village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain where Chocolat was filmed. Catch the morning TGV from Montbard for a day trip to Paris.

Highly recommended is a visit to Chablis on Sunday mornings for the lively market and of course a visit to the caves for wine tasting. It's a beautiful drive over there too, about 30 minutes away.

Private wine tours can be arranged and you could also have an authentic Japanese cookery lesson on a Saturday morning in the village.

Please Google any of the above for further information about our lovely region. We live in France permanently and will be happy to answer any queries you may have.
