The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region
Often called 'France profonde', or 'heartland of France', Limousin is a largley undiscovered region, marked by its stunning natural beauty and rich history. Its verdant landscape, ancient chateaux and picturesque villages are only now beginning to receive the attention they deserve.
Historically, the area is famed for some of the best beef farming in the world, its many French Oak Orhcards, as well as being a major timber producing area. The capital of the region, Limoges (only a 30 minute drive from the property), was once a powerful industrial centre, world-renowned for its porcelain.
Limousin is one of the least densely populated regions of France, and is therefore largely unspoilt. Its rolling, wooded landscape is dotted with quaint villages, churches and castles. The area is also a calling point for some of France's major rivers, including the Dordogne, the Vienne, the Creuse and the Cher, and is therefore also well-known for its excellent fishing. Watersport lovers will be spoilt for choice, the gorges, rivers and plentiful lakes mean it is an ideal location.
Summer temperatures in the 'French Lake District' are reliable and regularly exceed 30 degrees C, and while the winters can be long cold, snow is not at all uncommon - a uniquely beautiful sight!
Chateauponsac area
The local town of Châteauponsac, although small, has plenty of nice surprises. There's a museum, a romanesque church, a few cafes / restaurants, shops and plenty of other useful things such as banks and pertrol stations. In addition, you can find Kayaking lessons, swimming and cyling at the local camping grounds, which also offers organised events during July and August.
Going slightly furhter afield, there's plenty to get your teeth into. The area, with its many hills, lakes and rivers, is consisently brilliant for outdoor family activities such as hiking, cycling and bird watching. But if you want to try something a little different then you can visit Lac Saint-Pardoux. It's only a 15 minute drive from the cottage and here you can indulge in just about every watersport imaginable. The regional capital, Limoges, also has much to offer. You can visit the museums, pay a visit to the aquarium (which boasts over 300 species of fish), eat at the restaurants, or just do some shopping.
Even further afield you can you can visit famous cities such as Perigueux and Angouleme. And remember, the Limousin department is right between the celebrated regions of the Loire and the Dordogne, both of which are only a day trip away.
