The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region
The Limousin is a largley undiscovered region, marked by its stunning natural beauty and rich history. Its wonderful landscape, forests, famous lakes, ancient chateaux and picturesque villages are only just being searched out.
The area is famed for it's 'boeuf rouge' or red Limousin cattle which produce some of the best beef in the world, its many French Oak Orhcards and sweet chestnuts, as well as being a major timber producing area. The capital of the region, Limoges has a wonderful mediaeval 'butchers' quarter, it is famous for it's porcelain and has the mighty river Vienne at it's heart.
Limousin is one of the least densely populated regions of France, and is therefore largely unspoilt. Its rolling, wooded landscape is dotted with quaint villages, churches and castles. The area is also a calling point for some of France's major rivers, including the Dordogne, the Vienne, the Creuse and the Cher, and is therefore also well-known for its excellent fishing. Watersport lovers will be spoilt for choice, the gorges, rivers and plentiful lakes mean it is an ideal location.
Summer temperatures are reliable and regularly exceed 30 degrees C, and while the winters can be very cold and we do get snow, they are short and then the Spring flowers are a joy to behold. So, whatever the season, there will be something to delight.
The Chateauponsac / La Prade area
The local town of Châteauponsac, although small has quite a lot to offer; a local museum (a regular tardis), a lovely old roman church and bridge (which has just been renovated), bar / restaurants, shops and other useful things such as banks, supermarket with 24hr petrol and vet if you bring your dog . You can find Kayaking lessons, swimming and cyling at the local camping grounds, which also offers organised events during July and August and, of course the fetes and vide greniers (car boot sale).
The area, with its many hills, lakes and rivers, is superb for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, photography, bird watching and painting, it was certainly good enough for the famous artist Fred Yates, who lived locally until just before his recent death. Lac de Saint-Pardoux. is only a 15 minute drive from the cottage and on this huge lake you can enjoy all manner of watersports and horse riding. Limoges, also has much to offer with it's museums and aquarium (which boasts over 300 species of fish), eat at the restaurants, or just do some shopping.
Further afield is the immense lake, Vassivier where you can enjoy a dining cruise which takes a good 2 hours, the lake is so big!! The mediaeval town of Chauvigny is well worth a visit to see the Faulkner fly everything from huge storks, all manner of raptors to owls and parrots within the old castle walls.
There is just so much to see and do that it can't be listed here but, we can point you in the right directions when you want to venture out.
