The Loire Valley region
Situated in the lower part of the Loire valley which is famous for it's beautiful country villages, vineyards and Chateaux, rivers and lakes.
Ancient Oaks is situated in St. Saturnin in the Cher department and close to the borders of Indre, Creuse, and Allier all offering many places of interest to visit.
The local specialities are goats cheese, fois gras and of course wine.
This is an area full of rolling landscapes, beautiful scenery and empty roads. Ideal for cycling holidays and the local tourist office hire out excellent bikes (daily or weekly) for a very affordable price.
New to Ancient Oaks (2014 ) we are now able to accommodate cycling groups and offer catering at an additional cost per person, with self guided cycling map routes for the area as well as pick up from Limoge airport for those booking cycling holidays.
Cycle to local Chateaux, restaurants and take the local route des Vignobles after a good breakfast and on return to Ancient Oaks and have a dip in the pool while your evening meal is prepared for you.
New to the area is one of Europes' largest tree top and zip line adventure centres situated at Sidialles which is a large reservoir where swimming and water activities take place throughout the late spring/summer period. Sidialles is 8 km from ancient Oaks and a popular destination for all of our guests.
The region has a wealth of wildlife with birds of prey in abundance and often to be seen in our garden. Ideal for those who want to come up close to the birds as they sit on electricity posts and low branches, with deer often crossing your path while cycling or walking.
Ancient Oaks is just 14 km from the Chateau town of Culan which claims to be the "Heart of France"; its geographical centre. The area is traditional, unspoilt, French countryside with rolling hills, green valleys and the top quality AOC vineyard. The vineyards are famous for their Chateaumeillant gris (Rose) and rich reds. For further wine exploration, we recommend taking the Route des Vignobles which is a local tour of the vineyards that make up the Chateaumeillant wines.Meander from vineyard to vineyard and visit the many farms en route producing their own goats cheese as a perfect accompaniment to the famous gris wine.
The countryside is a birdwatchers paradise with a stunning variety of birds of prey including hen harrier, montegu's harrier, black and red kites and dozens more. There is also an abundance of songbirds and water fowl.
The local lanes are popular with walkers and cyclists and there are golf, tennis and water sports available nearby.
For messing about in (hire) boats and to visit the Roman Amphitheatre visit Drevant; 41km
For the famous Jacques Tati film museum visit Saint Severe ;14km
For zip lining it's Boussac ;19km and Sidialles ; 8km
For coarse fishing, its everywhere with day licenses available from the village shop. If you want to try for giant 50lb carp, we can usually book you a swim if you give plenty of notice.
And for browsing around the markets and sampling local cheeses and other produce, it's Chateaumeillant on Friday ;8km
or La Chatre on Saturday ;25km
For lounging around the pool with a cold drink and BBQ it's Ancient Oaks ;0km !
Stargazers will find that they are in one of France's 7 designated light pollution free areas and as a consequence there are stunning views of the stars, planets, shooting stars and man's contribution, the satellite.
The village shop(less than 1km away) is open 6 days a week and offers fresh bread, groceries, postal service, fishing licenses, beers and wines and is even the village bar....don't send Dad for the bread on his own in the morning!

"The right place if you want to experience a French holiday"
The photos didn't do this house justice. It was perfect in every sense: spacious, luxurious and clean. The owners have left nothing off the tick list. The pool functioned perfectly (after a long walk or cycle in the glorious surrounding countryside) and it was kept up to scratch by Dave and Di every morning. We used the supermarket which was about 6 miles away in Chateaumeillant. All you need is red Bordeaux plus some food to cook on the gas barbecue which we managed with ease despite having only brushed past one in Homebase, The visit to Culan chateau is worth the time and you should visit St,Severe (we cycled to it) to see the scene of Jour de Fete.
Top mark to the owners for friendliness and the set-up. Thanks.

"Cosy, well equipped house in the heart of the French countryside"
This is a beautiful barn conversion in the French countryside, with plenty to see and do in the surrounding area; lots of pretty small villages each with their own charm. For people with an interest in History there are plenty of sights to see: museums, roman amphitheatres (Drevant) and chateaux - the owners are very helpful and knowledgeable in helping you find things for you to see and do, no matter what your interests.
If you wish not to venture too far from the house, it in itself is well equipped to cater for your relaxation and enjoyment with a nice, big, open plan lounge-kitchen-dining room that maintains a warmth and charm. Outdoors there is a pool, expansive garden and outdoor kitchen to enjoy those long summer days and nights.
Me and my partner had an excellent time enjoying the beauty and calm of the area whilst relaxing in a cosy, yet spacious house. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.
Thank you Dave & Di!
