This spectacular country getaway was lovingly restored in 2006 with meticulous attention to authentic detail. A real oasis set amongst the gently rolling hills of romantic southern Burgundy, it has served as a relaxed and luxurious family home for the past several years. Extremely comfortable, most rooms are over 400 square feet, with three large dedicated reception rooms for dining, sitting, and cinema-watching. A fully-equipped kitchen with large breakfast table completes the ground floor. In summer months, you can enjoy your meals on the large flag-stoned south-facing terrace, adjoining the kitchen. Also an ideal spot for afternoon reading or apéritifs, as well as long, drawn out cigars and port, the stone balcony that runs the length of the house's south façade is a typical 'galerie maconnaise'.

Upstairs in the main part of the house are four bedrooms and two bathrooms, one en-suite. Also on this level there is a fourth reception room serving as a library and TV room. Reached by separate entrances, but under the same roof as the main house are two independent annexes with mezzanine bedrooms and separate bathrooms. Ideal for troublesome teenagers or mothers-in-law?

A workshop with sculpture table in the garden completes the built environment.

The garden has fruit trees and raised-bed vegetable and strawberry patches, with a flat lawn in front of the balcony, and a gentle slope up to a parking bay and beyond, for about an acre. There are no immediate neighbours, so you are free to bask in the peaceful quiet of the country, or make as much noise as you please. A superb silhouette of the church perched on the hill in neighbouring Pressy sous Dondin, along with surrounding woods and white charollaise cows grazing in pastures complete the idyllic view.

Les Henrys is a farmhouse built in the 1760s as an estate manager's house for a nearby chateau. The original formal reception room was allegedly designed to impress fear into the impoverished tenant farmers on rent day. The rest of the building was used for animals, carts, and hay.

Cluny is the nearest market town, less than 15 minutes away. Other village shops are closer. Vineyards abound, with the sublime Pouilly Fuissé within half an hour to the southeast, along with the up-and-coming Viré Clessé and Maconnais wines directly east. To the northeast you find Henry IV's personal favourite, Givry Premier Cru and the other delicious wines of the Côte Chalonnaise. Not sure which you prefer? Our local contact gives introductory wine-tasting classes on request and can provide you with a list of wineries to visit and even accompany you there for translating if need be.

The world's largest concentration of Romanesque churches, charming medieval architecture in almost every village, gourmet food, bucolic living and a genuine sense of “la France profonde” are all yours here. Lyon is 70 minutes away, with Dijon a bit further, and Geneva an hour and a half.

Long walks aplenty, some great wild swimming in local lakes and rivers, hundreds of kms of dedicated hiking and cycling paths, including part of the Compostela route and France's first rails-to-trails project, the “Voie Verte”.

The rare gem of a furnished 17th century castle with its magnificent gardens can be visited in Cormatin, an easy 20 minute drive, just north of the famous ecumenical site Taizé.
