About the home
The Belle Maison offers comfortable, flexible accommodation for couples, families with children or groups of up to 12. The option of taking the whole property or just the ground floor means that you can tailor your holiday to your needs.
*But rest assured , you will have sole occupancy of La Belle Maison, whether you are 2 or 12 people as we know that your own private space is an essential part of your holiday!*
The village has a boulangerie, a butcher's, a cafe and a restaurant, all within 2 minutes of your front door, and there is a large hypermarket on the road to Chateau du Loir just 4km drive away for more extensive provisioning.
The enclosed garden provides a secluded setting for those who simply want to chill out and enjoy sampling the local food and wine on the terrace, while the proximity of the lake just a few minutes down the road offers watersports, swimming, tennis, fishing, walks and an adventure playground on your doorstep. There are rambling trails signposted from the village which take you along the Loir; for forest lovers and mushroom hunters, the ancient oak forest of Berce is crisscrossed with cycle and hiking trails.

Vineyards cover the softly undulating slopes of the valley of the Loir and from the house you can even walk to several! Jasnieres and Coteaux du Loir are favourite local wines which are not widely found in the UK - rumour has it that the locals drink it all before it gets to be marketed!
Only some 40 minutes drive away. Le Mans and Tours are cities well worth visiting for their specialist shops and ancient architecture, and the historic 24 hours Le Mans circuit is a must for motoring enthusiasts. The famous chateaux of the Loire are also within easy reach - it is less than an hour's drive to the Loire itself, but dotted about the area and much nearer are smaller chateaux which exude their own particular charm.
La Chartre sur le Loir is a pretty little town just 5 km to the east of Marcon. The main cobbled street has all kinds of shops - fishmongers, butchers, antiques, craft and bric a brac - and on Thursdays there is a market on the square in front of the supermarket. A smaller produce market is held on the Place St Nicolas on Sunday mornings.
The Hotel de France is renowned for its connections with the Le Mans 24 hour race and in the bar you can see signed photographs of famous racing drivers and other memorabilia, as the hotel was, and still is, a favourite destination for competitors and spectators. The Belle Maison is well situated for a stay if you wish to experience the thrill of the 24 Hours Race, without the crush and the inevitable noise and fumes from the race track.

The Loire Valley / Sarthe region

Marcon enjoys a temperate climate with warm summers and crisp winters. Surrounded by the softly undulating hills of the valley of the Loir, the village benefits from the leisure facilities of the lake and the charm of a quintessential French village with its local shops. Agriculture is the main employment and the well tended fields of crops, the back yards full of chickens and ducks and pastures grazed by contented cattle illustrate the priority of home produced food, not to mention wine!
* For more information click on the 'visit the advertiser's website' link in the yellow box giving contact details under the availability calendar.
The Loire Valley was the playground of the Kings and nobles of France - with good reason - and their grand houses and châteaux adorn the beautiful countryside and make you marvel at the architectural expertise and the wealth of centuries past. Paris is only an hour's train ride away , so following in their ancestor's footsteps, Parisians still seek peace and relaxation here.
Today the region is still known as the garden of France, and a visit to Les Halles in Tours, or the covered market in Le Mans, will amaze you with the range and diversity of the meats, fruit and herbs on offer.
The Chateau du Loir / Marcon area
Chateau du Loir 5 km to the west of Marcon is a pleasant small town with a beautiful town hall and a large square where a market is held on Saturdays. Independently owned shops offer interesting wares in the little streets near the station and on the outskirts you have an Aldi, a Lidl and a large Leclerc hypermarket.
La Chartre 5 km to the east has more style and elegance , with its quaint cobbled street and old mill on the Loir river. There are pavement cafes to frequent, antique and junk shops to browse and Bastille Day celebrations to enjoy at the lake.
The Rally of the Automobile club of Western France is not to be missed by motoring enthusiasts. On the middle weekend of August, the lake side at Marcon is transformed into a car lover's paradise with all sorts of cars, from 2CVs to old Bentleys and their owners, some in appropriate gear, congregating and camping for the weekend. They parade through the village blowing their horns - but happily not too early in the morning!!
STOP PRESS! The rally will take place in August 2012 over the weekend of 18-19th.
Walks along the Loir or in the hills, hikes through the Forest of Berce and cycle rides are all favoured pursuits. From the Belle maison you can walk or cycle to the village of chahaignes and sample the delicious cuisine of one of our favourite restaurants: " Chez Miton". Miton was a motorbike racer and took part in the Dakar rally - his helmets are on display, along with photos of him and his Japanese wife. She is the chef and the meals have a subtle and delightful delicacy of touch.
For children, the lake and the beach there are rich in activities, and picnic benches and barbecue pits mean that you can spend a happy day there. There is also a beach side restaurant that serves salads, hotdogs and other light meals, as well as 'frites' and ice cream, and a range of soft and alcoholic drinks.

Guestbook for La Belle Maison
"This is just to say how much I enjoyed my stay last week. The
house is very comfortable and well-equipped, and Aurelia was really helpful with
the settling-in.
The area around Marcon is superb. It has made me think about enquiring about
buying a place there (centred in the area around Chartre sur Loir)
Many thanks again."
"On Friday 13th August, along with my closest family and friends, I flew from London to Tours for my 30th birthday to spend the weekend at La Belle Maison. We picked up our rental cars and drove to Marcon, a quiet, charasmatic village in the Loire Valley. Good maps were needed to find the town as it is off the beaten path, but after a few wrong turns, we found it, tucked away amongst the sunflowers.
Anne and her husband William greeted us with a warm welcome with lovely local cheeses and wine. We were delighted to have found such a lovely house to ourselves for the weekend. The courtyard has plenty of grassy space with a large table and chairs, a bbq and even grapes growing around the bannisters.
We cracked open the 10Litre wine, ate some French fromage and chatted away in the courtyard. The bells of the church next door chimed every hour up until 10pm and the place had such a lovely renaissance feel.
The house itself is about 800 years old, with lovely old fireplaces in each room and low wooden beams. The kitchen is modern with all the appliances you could need as are the bathrooms. As for its surroundings, the boulangerie in town makes the most delicious chocolate eclairs we have ever had the pleasure of tasting and warm, freshly baked baguettes.
We spent our days driving around and exploring the Chateaux of the Loire, beautiful old royal palaces with immense gardens. It's breathtaking. After being surrounded by hundreds of tourists each day, it was a lovely contrast to come back home each night to our quiet belle maison and play boules, laugh and drink the vino.
Highlights of the weekend included visiting the local winery Jasnieres and being shown the trocolodite caves where wine has been stored for hundreds of years. On the Saturday night we went to Chez Miton, an amazing restaurant which really was out of this world in taste and service. But most of all, being in such a warm and wonderful place with all my closest friends and family as I turned 30 made the trip just perfect.
I couldn’t recommend a more special place to visit than La Belle Maison in Marcon. Merci beau coup, Anne and William! xx "
"Dear Anne and William, Thank you. We have had a wonderful stay and wish we could stay longer. The gite is charming, full of character, very practical and comfortable. the enclosed garden was perfect for our family, and your kitchen is spectacular, I am just sorry i couldn't do it justice!" April 2011
"The gite is perfect. Thank you . A week is too short. We so enjoyed the garden after a long day adventuring into the countryside. lovely to relax with our grandson/son with a local wine and pate and a game of boules ( joined in with the locals!).
Definitely would love to come again - so comfortable - a home away from home!" May 2011
"What a wonderful place! - such a haven of peacefulness that indolence all too often got the better of us. It is always enjoyable learning about Loire wines and we are glad to have added Jasnieres and Valencay to our repertoire. We hope to be back to learn more." May 2011
"We have had a wonderful 11 days here. The area around Jupilles and Thoire is particularly lovely for long walks: plenty of shade! The house is wonderful, with so much space." August 2011
