Home description

Large, comfortable apartment on second floor of a chalet of 9 apartments in a central position within the lovely village of Château-d'Oex in the Swiss Alps. It has a large south facing sunny balcony with views over the village and the mountains. There are three bedrooms and also a double sofa-bed in the living room so there is plenty of room for up to 8 people. The open plan arrangement of the kitchen, dining room and living room gives a feeling of spaciousness, and the log fires create a cosy atmosphere on snowy days. We use the apartment regularly ourselves so we keep it well equipped.

Within the chalet itself there is a ski-room for storing skis and sledges during your stay, laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer, and games room with table-tennis table – table-tennis bats and balls are available in the apartment for guests to use. There are parking spaces outside the chalet, and a private box garage that can be used if required. There is also a large free car park adjacent to the chalet.

The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region

The Latin name for the Swiss Confederation is Confoederatio Helvetica , from which it gets its country code of CH, and this name is derived from the Helvetii, an ancient alpine celtic race. Today, Switzerland is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, of which Vaud (VD) is one, pronounced "voh". Bern is its capital, and Geneva and Zurich are seen as its economic centres.

Switzerland has a lot to offer for everyone in all seasons. Holidaymakers can either participate in the many outdoor activities that the country has to offer including ski-ing, hiking, water-sports or relax and watch others while enjoying the many breathtaking views the local scenery has to offer. We have been many times and find it difficult to say which season we prefer: snowy mountain winters, colourful spring, hot summer days or beautiful autumn hues.

Lake Geneva is its largest lake and is only 1 hour away from the apartment. There is plenty to do along the shores, and in the large towns that sit on the lake. Lausanne has the Olympic museum and the international Olympic committee has had its headquarters here since 1915. Montreux holds the annual Jazz festival in the summer and its lake edge is a lovely place to walk and appreciate the French alps across the lake, or take a boat trip across to France. Vineyards sweep across the Swiss side of the lake, and many villages have seasonal wine tasting of local produce.

Chateau-d'Oex area

Château-d'Oex is a traditional Swiss village in the beautiful Pays d'Enhaut region of the canton of Vaud in the Swiss Alps. This region is made up of the villages of Rossinière, Château-d'Oex and Rougemont and with mountains and rivers has some wonderful scenery at all times of the year.

Château-d'Oex has a wonderful host of amenities and activities including: numerous shops line the main road through the village and there is a well-stocked supermarket (Swiss Co-op), restaurants, bars, museums, discos, cinema, ten-pin bowling, mini-golf, churches, children's park and aerial slide (that adults can enjoy too!), swimming, ski-ing, tobogganing, mountain-biking, tennis courts (summer) / ice rink (winter), horse-riding, cheese-making displays, hot-air ballooning, river sports, hang-gliding, walking along various routes around the village and beyond.

Winter highlights:
Ski-ing and snowboarding can be enjoyed on the many slopes in and around Château-d'Oex. The nursery slopes and children's "ski garden" are 2 minutes walk from the apartment. There is a cable car from the centre of the village up to La Braye where there are several further ski-runs to suit all abilities. There is also a long mountain sledge run from the top, sledges are provided - hours of fun. Château-d'Oex has its own ski-school and ski hire is available from various outlets in the village itself. Holidaymakers can also enjoy tobogganing, sleigh rides, hot-air ballooning and walking. The glacier is 45 minutes away by car at Les Diablarets, and there are approximately 250km of pistes to explore along the Gstaad valley, and more at Les Mosses and La Lécherette – 25 minutes away by car.

Summer highlights:
There is a beautiful open-air Olympic sized swimming pool in the village which is normally open May to September. It is surrounded by grassy banks, with a children's splash pool and small restaurant and bar also on site. Many river sports can be enjoyed on the River Sarine which flows at the edge of the village including white water rafting, hydrospeed, kayaking and canoeing (May - Aug). There are also some wonderful walks in and around the village.

Leaflets detailing walks and the many activities in the area are available in the apartment.

Châteux-d'Oex also has its own hospital with 24 hour cover and very pleasant doctors and staff. We had to make use of this service once and can highly recommend it.

Local interest:
The famous English actor David Niven made his home in Château-d'Oex in later life, and was buried in the village cemetery following his death in 1983.
Betrand Picard and Brian Jones took off from Château-d'Oex in 1999 in their Breitling Orbiter to become the first to fly around the globe in a hot-air balloon
