The Swiss Alps region
Switzerland is breathtaking, its extraordinary alpine scenery and awesome lakes make for an invigorating outdoor holiday. The skiing and hiking are second to none, this is home to the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc as well as the Four Valleys. Cities such as Montreux,Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich offer a variety of experiences – from the ultra modern to the picturesque and rural.
Bern is recognized as the federal capital of Switzerland. It's also distinguished as the city in which Einstein lived when he worked out his famous theory of relativity. Not bad for a place that was allegedly named after a bear hunt. Today, Bern still has those famous stone bear pits that hold live bears and, in general, the city still retains a medieval quality, which is evident in the gothic architecture and cobblestone streets. That's not likely to change either, as Bern was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Popular attractions include the thirteenth century clock tower, the gothic Cathedral, the Paul Klee collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, and the four-mile covered shopping arcade, which is the largest in Europe. If you have a sweet tooth, the city is also the home of Toblerone Chocolate.
Chateau D'Oex Is a thriving town with an excellent supermarket and traditional food shops. There is a wide selection of restaurants and cafes, together with car hire, sports equipment rental, video rental and daily international newspapers. There are banks, a tourist office, cinema and museum. All denominational churches including Anglican. Year-round concerts, recitals and traditional alpine events. The world-renowned Swiss rail service gives easy access throughout Switzerland and Europe. Pick-up facilities for guests are available from the station and Geneva airport.
