Home description
The Chalet is a home from home built over three floors. The heated garage, a twin bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor. The first floor consists of the main living area with a balcony overlooking the valley and mountains. On this floor there is also a bedroom with large twin beds opening onto the balcony, a shower room and a study/single bedroom with piano. Upstairs are two further bedrooms, one double and a twin. There is a baby's cot with bedding, change mat and mobile high chair available on request. We have recently renovated the bathrooms and incorporated a fully equipped kitchen into the lounge/dining area creating open plan living which is more convivial.
The chalet is still used by our family so we leave it well equipped and comfortable. To ensure that our guests also feel at home there, we have provided a selection of games, books, CDs, Tapes, DVDs and videos, even sledges, to keep all ages entertained. The chalet is perfect for relaxing or as a base for the many outdoor activities available in the village and surrounding area. The chalet is on the outskirts and is only a 20minute walk into the village centre which is traditionally Swiss, with a thriving local French speaking community and close to the German speaking Gstaad area. There are many amenities in the surrounding areas to satisfy everybody's tastes.

The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region
1 hour 45 mins from Geneva by car (mainly motorway), approx 2 hours by train with 1 change. Approx 8 hours from Calais by car including a couple of short stops. The mountain railway which stops in Chateau d'Oex and at Les Granges, is convenient and very reliable for local travel up and down the valley. Lake Geneva is a wine growing area with many interesting villages along it's shores. Montreux is our nearest "coast". Within 45 minutes you can be strolling along the promenade by the lake, take a boat ride, or cross to France, be sipping a drink and admiring the views. Either go by car or take the "Panoramic Express" train direct to and from Montreux. In the summer there is the famous Montreux Jazz Festival.
Chateau-d'Oex / Gstaad area
Chateau d'Oex is a traditional Swiss village, which is well serviced with restaurants, a supermarket, and smaller shops selling local produce. It is well known through the actor David Niven who chose this village to be his home and is buried in the local cemetary. There are many amenities, tennis courts in summer becoming and ice rink in the witnter, next to the ten pin bowling centre and mini golf. There is a cinema, museums including the balloon museum, art gallery, an outdoor swimming pool (summer only) and adventure playground as well as, horse riding, white water rafting and kayaking all in or around the village. Low level walking trails along the river through the woods, or high level energetic scrambles and mountain bike trails will suit all levels of fitness. Chateau d'Oex is famous for its annual international hot air balloon festival in January: a spectacle worth seeing. The friendly village retains its delightful Swiss character.
Gstaad is only a 20 min drive along the valley famous for the picturesque Bernese Oberland Railway journey. Interlaaken is a couple of hours away. Bern, the capital of Switzerland is an hour away. One can visit the glacier at Les Diablerets where it is possible to ski all year round. Larger shops are found in Bulle, 25km away, and the Chateau of Gruyeres (famous for it's cheese) is on the way. Nearby one can visit the Cailler chocolate factory.
During the snow season, the stunningly beautiful Gstaad valley is an uncrowded and unspoilt area, with 250 kilometres of fabulous alpine slopes. Perfect for skiing, snowboarding and winter hiking. Chateau d'Oex has its own network of ski lifts, accessed via a cable car from the village, and its own ski school. There is a long 'luge' (sledge run) from the top of the mountain: sledges provided. Skiers can also benefit from a lift pass entitling them to ski extensively in any village in the valley from Chateau d'Oex to Gstaad, Schoenreid, Saananmoeser and the glacier at Les Diablerets. Slopes are always beautifully maintained and picturesque, as none of the villages are huge resorts and all retain their individual characters. There are lovely "ski gardens" for children to learn in at Chateau d'Oex, Rougemont, Schoenreid and Saanenmoeser. All villages can be reached easily by road or rail (passes include use of the train). Wonderful for skiers who get bored easily and like to investigate new places. The Tourist Information Office is very helpful and can give advice including a monthly diary of events in English.
