The Poitou-Charentes region
The Charente Department of France has a micro climate second only to the Cote D'Azur in terms of sunshine hours. The unspoilt area is gently undulating with rivers and small villages connected by hundreds of country lanes all beautifully kept with neatly cut verges full of wild flowers. There are many lakes within the department, some of which have sailing and swimming facilities. Small farms with small fields surround the property where the famous Limousin cattle are raised - renowned for producing superb steaks.
There are many historic towns including Limoges and Angouleme which are well worth a visit. Cobbled streets and cafe's are in abundance. There are always plenty of events taking place particularly in the summer, with the "Blues Passion" week held in Cognac every year in July, and the world famous "World music event" held every August in Confolens. Most small towns need very little excuse to hold some kind of event whether its an accordian playing or "Moules et frites" weekend! The area is certainly not over run with tourists which is part of its charm.
Many guests who stay at LFDL (Le Ferme de L'Alba) who spend their entire week enjoying the tranquillity of the private pool and garden, soaking in the lovely views over the surrounding valley, only venturing out for provisions or to sample French hospitality at the local bar! Our on site gardiens can supply daily bread, croissants and other provisions if required including an initial supply of food and wine for your arrival by arrangement. Graham and Vanessa stay completely separate from the main house in their own cottage in the grounds preserving your tranquil privacy but are on hand to make sure that your stay is as uncomplicated and as enjoyable as it could possibly be.
We have 8 bikes on site and the entire area is surrounded with small quiet country lanes making it ideal for bike rides or country walks (many paths through woods and fields). A particular favourite is a 3 mile cycle ride to a nearby lake for a picnic and glass of wine and perhaps a snooze under the shade of the trees that surround the lake. The variety and abundance of the bird life is also a charming feature of this rural part of France.
The owners are particularly keen that all guests should have a totally relaxing holiday, truly unwind and enjoy a good nights rest in the top quality pocket sprung beds. There is deliberately no TV to encourage good conversation and to provide a break from our "screen orientated" daily lives.
There are activities for all in the area if required such as a "Tree - high wire adventure centre" or a Velo Rail for those wanting something more active. Confolens, a beautiful historical town set on the river Vienne is just 30 mins away and well worth a visit. La Rochefoucauld is close by and is steeped in history with evidence of habitation going back 200,000 years! The town itself dates from the middle ages and is complete with a lovely Rennaissance castle still owned and inhabited by the family of the current duke, Francois de la Rochefoucald.
There are 2 golf courses within 30 minutes. For that special lunch or supper, the restaurant "La Grange aux Oies" (Oie is goose - pronounced "wah") with its gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers which once belonged to King Francois 1er at the "Chateau Nieuil" is only 4 miles away and is not to be missed. Full details of this and all nearby restaurants and local shops at the property with further recommendations from the gardiens as required.
