The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Lisbon, Portugal's capital, a romantic and cultural city, known for its amazing light, is located over seven hills and bathed by the Tagus River. Its history goes back before Roman colonisation and you can still find traces of the different civilizations and cultures that graced this land.

The picturesque and medieval streets of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Chiado, where one can hear the Fado at night, a unique synthesis of old and new, is a must. Splendid monuments, castles and astonishing sights “miradouros” keep you company every step of the way.

There is a large range of activities to do and places to see in Lisbon, like the Oceanario, Europe's biggest aquarium, alone worth the visit for its perfect picture of ocean wild life. This city also offers an abundance of distinguished restaurants, fantastic shopping and great nightlife.

To the west of the city lies mysterious Sintra, a verdant cultural landscape - declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site with its mystical forests crowned with castles, palaces and grand mansions.

Taking a ride on a horse-pulled carriage and gazing at the marvelous manor-houses, as one drives up to Pena Palace, is the perfect experience that epitomises this magical place. It has a vast and endless variety of exotic trees, subtropical plants and shrubs that were imported in the 19th Century, offering, in addition, spectacular views across the coast line.

Sunny Cascais, a chic seaside resort is also located a mere 15 km west of Lisbon. This lively town boasts a number of sandy beaches, excellent restaurants and championship golf courses, as well as a world-class marina.

Near Cascais is the famous beach Guincho, known for its high waves that attract windsurfers from all around the world.

The next town to the east of Cascais is the resort town of Estoril with its popular Casino and great nightlife.

Heading south across the Tagus river, Costa da Caparica, Serra da Arrábida and picturesque villages such as Sesimbra and Setubal are also worth a visit for their natural splendor.

For golf and beach lovers, don't miss Aroeira with 350 hectares golf estate located on a natural reserve and surrounded by a stretch of 30 km of unspoiled sandy beaches backed up by dunes and ochre cliffs, considered the best in Lisbon region.

In terms of gastronomy the Southern part of Lisbon is an area of the most freshly caught fish with an abundance of sea food. Cheese made from ewe's milk in Azeitão and wines produced in the region of Palmela, internationally renowned for their high quality.

Excellent wines are always on the menu and those with a sweet tooth can indulge in wonderful handmade pastries including the delectable “pastéis de Belém”.

Charneca da Caparica

Aroeira´s wide beaches are the favourite spot for Libon people spending their weekends and vacations as is the closest seaside resort to Lisbon. It is located on the occidental coast of Península de Setúbal, southwest of Lisbon, covering an area of around 10km2 from the sea to the scarp.

From the left margin of Tagus river and the estuary of Albufeira, the coastal extent is approximately 30 kilometres of immense beach.

This unbelievable place is crossed by geological and geomorphological sights of vital interest for its scientific and natural resources, i.e. a prehistoric beach landscape is that is formed by amazing carved and covered with vegetation cliffs, large erosion deposits and huge ravines.

Not less famous, the most scenic and dominant element of the area: the Botanical Reserve of the National Fame Preserve of Medos, known as the King's Pine Forrest, the result of a Portuguese King ´s order to plant the land to reduce deforestation and incursion of dunes. Less but not least, Mata das Dunas, that still remains a natural forest at the base of the beach.

Despite the fishing industry, the beach and the sea are both responsible for bringing to this region a seasonal tourist influx that make its economy work.

In Aroeira you may ride a bike or have a walk on the sea wall while having fun avoiding the salty splashes.

If you prefer, a small train will take you along the coast providing access to the hugely lengthy beach. During the day, the fishing boats arrive and bring in their nets and the beachgoers, body boarders and surfers run to help and experience. It is lovely to observe the prows of these boats, embellished with traditional paintings.

These beaches are great for surf, bodyboard, windsurf and kitesurf. Pay attention where you choose to laze, there are different character beaches from gay communities, nudist persons and family- orientated.

Next to Mata dos Medos, you´ll find the biggest residential and golf resort around Lisbon, named Herdade da Aroeira. Around 600 meters from the beach, located in a preserved area, the resort has around 50 fenced hectares, private security 24 /24, and is overgrown with pines and small lakes. Offers 2 golf courses with 18 holes each and a golf academy with a very peasant club house. For the youngest, there is a very appealing tropical pool, a funny playground and 4 tennis courts and a truly contact with nature. A distinct restaurant, a supermarket, a stationary and a pharmacy are also available. All these features make Herdade da Aroeira the place to be on vacation.

Everywhere, maritime flavours are another major attraction. The gastronomy is excellent. Stews and fish soups are very famous, although there's nothing like eating a freshly caught fish, seaside and surrounded with the traditional and welcoming environment. Be pleased to accompany the meal with the unique Portuguese wine.
