The Dorset region
Charmouth is close to the borders of Devon and Somerset and after only a few minutes drive you can visit these counties and the sites they have to offer. North Devon can be reached by car in just over the hour.
This is home to thefirst World Heritage Site and the Jurassic Coasts outstanding geology represents 185 million years of Earth history. Thw whole 95 miles is open and spectacular , a walkers paradise to explore the sandy beaches, bays, coves and headlands. Thers is also an incredible variety of bird, plant and sea life.
The area has clean water and is ideal for swimming, snorkelling etc. There are mixed sandy and shingle beaches in Lyme Regis and Charmouth. The shingle Chesil beach extends 18 miles to the west. This beach is a favourite of beach fisherman as the sea is deep close to the shore.
The area has many National Trust sites with mansions open to visitors throughout the summer.
The Market town of Bridport has shops, restaurants coffee bars and a market in the High Street on Saturdays.
Charmouth is a coastal resort and with its ancient coastline of dramatic cliffs is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. The river Char flows out through the middle of Charmouth beach and the bridge provides a picturesque area that has remained unchanged for decades. The beach area provides a mix of sand and pebble beach. Fossil hunting has been a favourite of many for years.
Charmouth has a butcher, baker, stores shop, paper shop, chemist, fish and chip shop, restaurants and pubs. On Mondays there is a large market in the local field. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage restaurant is in nearby Axminster and Mark Hix's Oyster &Fish House is nearer Lyme Regis.
We are keen on the Jurassic Seafood Wine Bar in Lyme Regis and for good pub food The George In Chideock.
Jane austen and catharine of Aragon were just two of charmouth's many famous frequent visitors.
