The Cornwall region
The South Cornwall length of coast is relatively sheltered, being either south-east or south facing and being largely in the lee of the large peninsula of the Lizard. Cliffs of moderate height are found along most of the length, and there are numerous intimate little bays and some quite prominent headlands.
In the eastern half of the length the coast is cut by wooded river valleys, at Fowey, Looe and Seaton. In the centre is the major feature of St Austell Bay, the only part that lacks the otherwise ubiquitous cliffs. This bay also has the only major length of coastal development in South Cornwall, based on the town of St Austell and its extensions. Elsewhere, small ancient fishing ports such as Mevagissey, Fowey and Looe are scattered along the coast, all of them very picturesque. Major estuaries, of the Fal and Tamar, mark the two ends, each of them of great historic maritime importance.
Charlestown, St Austell
There will be no need to get the car out to find somewhere to good to eat, as within easy walking distance of the cottage there are two pubs which serve food and excellent local ales, as well as a restaurant which specialises in locally caught fish. 'Charlie's' across the road serves breakfasts, light meals and cream teas. You can buy delicious pasties at the local kiosk and locally made ice creams.
There are craft shops, a gift shop and a gallery too. There is also a fascinating Shipwreck and Heritage Centre.
The coast path can be picked up in Charlestown. This offers some of the County's most spectacular view points.
Golfers are very well catered for too - Carlyon Bay golf course , Porthpean golf course and St Austell golf course are all just minutes away.
There is a sailing club at Porthpean, the next village along and, of course there is no shortage of beautiful beaches all within a short driving distance.
The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both just a short drive away, as are the towns of Mevagissey and Fowey.
St Austell, just a couple of minutes by car, has all local town amenities, including two 24 hour supermarkets and a mainline (Paddington - Penzance) railway station (1.7 miles) with good connections within Cornwall and beyond.
Slightly further away but still under an hour by car, are Padstow with Rick Stein's restaurants and Jamie Oliver's '15' in Newquay.
