The North China / Beijing / Beijing City region
Beijing, also known as Peking, is the capital and the second largest city of China. The total area of Beijing is approximately 16,800 sq km. Mandarin Chinese is the language spoken in Beijing, with Beijing's dialect being the standard form of Mandarin.
Beijing has four defined seasons. Summer and winter are the two longest seasons, while fall and spring are the shortest. The climate varies according to the season, with autumn being the most pleasant time to visit. Autumn is usually clear with cool temperatures, while winter is dry and, at times, bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping below 5 degrees F (-15 C).Spring is usually dry but very windy ( it is a good idea to protect your eyes to keep out blowing debris), while the summer is rainy and hot, with temperatures at times soaring above 100 degrees F (38 C).
Beijing lies at approximately the same latitude as Philadelphia in the U.S. and Madrid in Spain. Greater Beijing has an area of 16,808 square km, and a population of 16 million. About half of the people live on the outskirts of the city. The city is 39% flat land and the other 61% is quite mountainous area. Beijing is surrounded by the Yanshan Mountains on the west, north and east while the small alluvial plain of the Yongding River lies to its southeast. Beijing faces the Bohai Sea, and the area is also called the Beijing Bay.
Chaoyang District / Luthensa Area
Located in the East of Beijing City, this 476sq.k district has been described as offering all things to all people--not least because it forms the prime commercial, entertainment and shopping heart of the capital. It also embraces the Central Business District (CBD), and is thus the China HQ for, currently, more than 8,000 foreign companies. Government and other official entities also abound, as do foreign embassies.
The district also boasts delightful parks, notably Chaoyang; many theatres; the world-famous Workers' Stadium; fabulous indoor and open-air markets; almost countless restaurants between them offering probably every major Chinese and foreign cuisine; traditional tea-houses by the score; dozens of four- and five-star international hotels; and unique cultural remains from the Yuan Dynasty. Probably the majority of tourists and business visitors base themselves in Chaoyang--the ideal starting point for all other areas of Beijing.
It is home to a good part of Beijing's diplomatic quarters, with many embassies located in the area. The famous Sanlitun bar street also finds its home in Chaoyang district, as well as Beijing's evolving CBD and the Olympic Park built for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Chaoyang precinct is expansive in size, stretching as far west as Chaoyangmen on the eastern 2nd Ring Road, and extending nearly as far east as the Ximazhuang toll station on the Jingtong Expressway. Within the urban area of Beijing, it is the largest precinct. (Haidian comes in at a close second.) It also stretches north towards the airport area. In fact, it also hosts Beijing Capital International Airport, an exclave within Shunyi District/Precinct.
How to get there
