Enquire nowThe Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Venus is located in the village of Kokkino Chorio, near Plaka, which is a 30 minute drive from Chania airport. Chania is a great place to visit with its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
The Chania / Kokkino Chorio area
Kokkino Chorio is a small, traditional Greek village situated on the rugged coast with magnificent across Souda Bay to the Akrotiri Peninsular. The White Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop. The village is famous for its role in the film of “Zorbas the Greek’ and the owner of the local ‘kafenion’ in the centre of the village is proud to talk about Antony Quinn and show his photographs.
There is also a Taverna and small local mini market. A small glass workshop on the outskirts of Kokkino Chorio recycles glass to produce items from “blown” glass. This process can be observed in the mornings and purchases can be made of beautiful lamps and glass ornaments produced.
The coastline north west of the village is an extremely interesting place for experienced walkers, with its ground formation and caves, such as the caves of Petsi (or Karavotopos) and Katalimata, which is located at the centre of the village. At cape Drapano, approximately 10 metres under water, is the impressive Elephant Cave, full of stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and colours.
The main square in Plaka is still very much the focal point of village life and is only a 2 minute drive from Villa Venus. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities - excellent tavernas and well stocked mini markets.
The local resort of Almerida is only 7 mins away by car, with Kalives a further 5 mins by car round the bay. There is also a secluded cove 5 mins away by car. Both resorts have radio taxi's. The areas around Kokkino Chorio and Western Crete overall, has a wide variety of coves and beaches which you can explore by car.
Western Crete is an ideal spot for walking and exploring and Villa Venus offers an ideal base location. There are many points of interest including gorges, coves, caves, historical buildings and museums that illustrate the history of this part of the Mediterranean. Chania (little Venice) is a 30 minute drive away with its lovely old waterfront.
The lovely resort of Almyrida is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 30 minutes away by car.
Limnoupolis Water Park
is just a short drive through Chania and has many water rides and games, a Jacuzzi, pool bar, café etc, an experience the kids will love. It can also be reached by public transport from Chania.
Georgeopolis
Georgioupolis, Is worth a visit if you want somewhere a bit more lively. It used to be a sleepy little fishing village but its long sandy beach has made it popular and it is now quite busy although the centre of Georgioupolis still has the feel of a small resort. The attractive square is lined with shops and tavernas.
Lake Kournas
Lake Kournas is 3 kms inland from Georgioupolis is the only freshwater lake in the whole of Crete. This makes it a popular "exotic" weekend destination for the Cretans. The landscape in Kournas, especially if you pick a grey day, is reminiscent of a mountain lake in the Alps rather than being in Crete. Well worth a visit on a weekday.
