The Crete region
Crete, largest of the Greek islands is situated in the southern Mediterranean and has some of the most stunning and beautiful locations in the world. From awe inspiring snow topped Mountains to unspoilt sandy beaches and turquoise seas Crete has something for every taste.
Venturing out from your holiday villa you will find that Crete is a holiday destination which offers a huge variety of attractions, activities and places of interest. Crete has a fantastic dry, sunny climate for the majority of the year and even in the winter spectacular views of the snow covered White Mountains can be enjoyed in the sunshine. Crete is said to be the birthplace of Zeus and today many visitors return on a regular basis to explore the variety of experiences this island offers. Historical sites are scattered across the island revealing secrets of the ancient Minoan civilization such as Knossos and Phaestos. Venetian fortresses and Byzantine churches can be found across Crete. Beautiful Venetian harbours provide breathtaking scenery whilst enjoying the fresh fish and vegetables grown locally on the island. Appreciate why Cretans are renowned for one of the healthiest diets in the world and also renowned for their hospitality.
Chania / Kokkino Chorio area
Kokkino Chorio is a small, traditional Greek village situated on the rugged coast with magnificent views across Souda Bay. To the south the White Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop. The village is famous for its role in the film of “Zorbas the Greek’ based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis the internationally famous Cretan writer. Still the owner of the local ‘kafenion’ in the centre of the village is proud to talk about Antony Quinn and show his photographs.
A small glass workshop on the outskirts of Kokkino Chorio recycles glass to produce items from “blown” glass. This process can be observed in the mornings and purchases can be made of beautiful lamps and glass ornaments produced.
Overlooking Kokkino Chorio is the strangely shaped Drapanokefala Mountain or Calapodha (so named during the Venetian occupation). The coastline northwest of the village is an extremely interesting place for experienced walkers, with its ground formation and caves, such as the caves of Petsi (or Karavotopos) and Katalimata, which is located at the centre of the village. At cape Drapano, approximately 10 metres under water, is the impressive Elephant Cave, an area 60m² full of stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and colours. The sandy beaches of Almirida are a 10min drive.
Nearby Plaka s a busy all year round village with 2 mini-markets and several tavernas and bars. The restaurants and bars set their tables out onto the village square and an enjoyable evening can be spent watching local village life and partaking of delicious meals made with local fresh produce. The small local hotel hosts Cretan music evenings as well as other types of musical evenings. Every summer the Cretan music festival the ‘Plakiana’ takes place, in honour of Michael Papadakis, a fine lyra player of recent years.
