This is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful and unspoilt ares of Crete. The local beaches and coves are easily accessible and are quiet and family friendly. Almirida and Kalives have clean sandy beaches and lots of cafes and restaurants. There are many historical sites including a roman fort at Ancient Aptera, and a mosaic in Almirida. The immediate area is popular with walkers and cyclists. Further afield, the famous Samaria Gorge (the largest gorge in Europe and a terrific day out) is within driving distance. Chania itself, the ancient capital of the island, is a 40 minute drive, with easy parking and fantastic shopping, including the famous "leather lane". Chania also has a lovely old, Venetian harbour, a war museum, terrific alfresco cafes and restaurants, and nightlife!. A trip to the ancient site of Knossos takes about 2 hours, but the effort is well worth it. About an hour away is "Limnopoulis", a great water park for the kids. The villa has a number of travel guides and historical books about Crete. Chania / Kokkino Chorio areaKokkino Chorio is a small village with two tavernas and a mini market. There is a renowned glass factory with a shop, selling souvenirs and collectables made from recycled glass. Bigger towns include Plaka, Almirida and Kalives, ideal for shopping and eating out. Almirida has a lovely, blue-flag beach, with watersports and boat trips, as well as some great restaurants and small shops, so is great for a family day by the beach. How to get thereFlights to Crete with Easyjet, Jet2, Monarch, Thomsons. For a hire car we recommend Auto Europe. There are also 6 flights a day from Athens, and a ferry from Athens every day.
