The Crete region
Crete is the largest island of Greece and the fifth larger island of the Mediterranean Sea. It lies at the Southern Aegean Sea and it separates the Aegean from the Libyan Sea. Crete is a link between Europe, Africa and Asia. This geographical position, being at the junction of major civilizations and cultural currents, influenced its history throughout the past 5000 years. Majestic mountains, full of legends and history, rise in its centre; to the West the White Mountains, in the middle the mountain of Idi (Psiloritis) and to the East the mountain of Dikti. These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lassithi and Omalos, caves like Diktaion Andron and Idaion Andron, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria. The scenery is constantly changing. In one place rough and barren, in another wooded and gentle. Olive trees, orange groves, vineyard, vegetable gardens are everywhere. Old stone farmhouses, monasteries and village perched on mountain ridges, castles and chapels forgotten on steep slopes. Shores lined with forbidding rocks, often inaccessible, but also lots of endless sandy or pebbly beaches. Although globalization, tourism and economic growth have inevitably changed the way of life in Crete, especially in the large urban centres which are changing in appearance from one day to the next, the Cretans still preserve the bonds with their rich folk traditions and cultural heritage. There are many villages where life goes on in the same rhythm it has for centuries. In the countryside, even in our days many old Cretan men and women wear the traditional costume and the Cretan idiom is widely spoken even in the large cities.
Chania / Almyrida area
Chania is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania Prefecture. The city lies on the north coast of the island, about 70Km west of Rethymno and 140Km west of Heraklion. It is divided in two parts: the Old town and the modern city. Chania is a city of great history, since Arabs, Venetians and Turks have walked through its alleys. As a result, the architectural influence of the old town by these three cultures is obvious. The beautiful Venetian quarter is a web of atmospheric streets that tumble onto a picturesque harbour with a magnificent lighthouse. In the narrow alleys, among colourful houses and flowered gardens, restored Venetian houses have been converted into chic restaurants and hotels, ruined houses into tavernas.
The picturesque maritime village of Almirida lies on the entrance of the Souda gulf in Apokoronas county of Chania Prefecture, just between Chania and Rethymno towns, with a view of Lefka Ori (White Mountains). It has two wonderful sandy and shallow beaches with clear water, organized with deckchairs, umbrellas, wc and lifeguards. The place is a real paradise for the fans of water sports but also for children, which can swim and play safely on the beach. There is the possibility of renting a boat or taking lessons of surfing and sailing. The village has everything – super market, bakery shop, restaurants, bars, press, shops, car and bike rentals, taxis and buses. Across the sea-side there are lots of restaurants, or tavernas as called in Greece, famous for their delicious local foods and of course for excellent fresh fishes. If you enjoy walking, Almirida is surrounded by a few green hills and beautiful country sides which are ideal for enjoyable walks. Almirida can be the base for your excursions to one of the prettiest regions in Crete, the area of Apokoronas. Plaka, Drapanos, Kokkino Chorio, Kalives, Kefalas, are some of the unspoiled villages near Almirida which offer breathtaking views of the sparkling blue Aegean Sea and the spectacular Lefka Ori (The White Mountains).

Guestbook for Markos Villa
"When we closed the gate for the first time behind us we were a little bit jealous. The Markos is really marvelous. Excellent equipment and a very good swimming pool. as well for the adults as well for the children. You have a beautiful view from the villa to the sea. In the surroundings you can make very many beautiful day trips. The island of Crete must certainly be visited . When I go back to Crete the Villa Markos will be my home."
“This property exceeds anyone’s expectations. Caretakers met our every need. The view from the house is awesome. Would return again and again.”
''We would like to thank you and your family for our wonderful stay in Markos Villa! The villa is really lovely - it was really comfortable, and practical, and with such fantastic views of the countryside and mountains. The village and landscape around the villa are stunningly beautiful. And the food that your mother cooked for us was delicious - we enjoyed it enormously, and having such beautiful home-made food prepared for us made the week very relaxing for me in particular. It was also a wonderful surprise that the villa was cleaned for us half way through our stay.
Thank you, too, for the lovely toys that you bought for the children. They really enjoyed their stay. We were all very sad to leave. We would very much like to stay in Markos Villa again, and will keep in touch with you.''
