Home description

Villa Daymer is set in tranquil olive groves on a headland over looking Souda Bay. The Villa has been particularly designed to take full advantage of the stunning sea views to the north and spectacular White Mountains to the south – with windows and extensive patio areas strategically positioned at all levels around the villa.

The villa is well designed to accommodate varying combinations of holiday makers – from family groups to couples- and fees are set to reflect the number of people making a reservation. If you need space and facilities to provide comfort for groups of people holidaying together or just want peace and seclusion in spacious surroundings, the villa can accommodate you.

There are a number of quiet tracks amongst the olive groves surrounding the villa and leading to the coastal headland which are excellent for walking. The area is particularly beautiful in the early season when the wild flowers are in bloom – Crete boasts an unbelievable range of wild flowers and many of them, such as wild Gladiola, Alpine Squills, and wild Daffodils and can be spotted within the immediate vicinity of the Villa. The snow capped White Mountains are also particularly beautiful at this time of year.

The Crete region

Crete is the largest and one of the most substantial of the Greek Islands. It has varied geography ranging from mountains to fertile plains and two big cities; Iraklion and Hania. The island is surprisingly cosmopolitan and has a unique history.

Crete is known as the home of Europe’s earliest civilisation and is the seat of the legendary Minoan empire. Excavations at Knossos and Festos have revealed the secrets of King Minos and a Cretan society that ruled the Greek world.

Following on from the Minoan period, Crete was passed under the control of Greeks, Romans, Saracens, the Byzantine and Venetian empires and finally to Turkey. The island was also occupied by the Germans in the second world war. Each passing phase of the island has left it’s mark physically on the landscape and in the islanders’ personalities. Hania is a good place to sample relics from all these periods, as is Rethymno and Iraklion.

Crete has a flourishing agricultural economy based on it’s prolific olive groves and olive oil production – a traditional commodity that is valued with an almost iconic reverence by the islanders.

The island offers bustling, lively areas with all the attraction of cities or beach resorts, but is large enough to have retained vast undeveloped areas of outstanding beauty and traditional, Greek villages.

Crete has one of the longest summers of all the Greek islands. It is possible to swim in the sea from April to November and it is warm and sunny into October. April and May are beautiful months to visit as the weather is warm and the island is covered with wildflowers and as the year moves on into summer the climate becomes hot and sunny with very little rainfall.

Chania / Almyrida area

Villa daymer is a 5 minute drive away the coastal village of Almyrida. Almyrida is also easily reached on foot or bicycle. It is a small, friendly village with a beautiful sandy beach sheltered by a harbour wall which ensures the sea is perfect for bathers of all capabilities. A string of traditional tavernas and bars line the beach serving traditional Greek food and drinks throughout the day and into the evening.

From the beach in Almyrida catamarans, canoes and wind surfing boards can be hired. These can be enjoyed in the stunning Souda bay.

Almyrida offers a wider range of shopping facilities with a small supermarket, bakery (incorporating a very laid back internet café element), jewellery and gift shops.

Almyrida is located on the Northwest coast of Crete in Souda Bay on the Apokoronas peninsula. Hania airport and city are situated 20 approximately 19 Kms away on the Akrotiri peninsula.

A 5 minute drive along the coast brings you to the quaint village of Kalives. Kalives is a bustling little village with a number of services not found in Almyrida, such as a bank, a post office, a laundrette etc as well as the usual bars and taverns. The beach at kalives is less busy and towards the west end groups of wild daffodils can be seen. Boat trips can be booked from here.

Places to visit:

The archaeological site of Knossos lies 5km south of Iraklion. The site is open year round and is well worth a visit as the largest of the Minoan palaces. Thriving three and a half thousand years ago it is the cradle of the legend of King Minos, the Minotaur and the labyrinth.

Closer to the villa are the ancient ruins of Aptera, where massive walls, huge Roman cisterns, and remains of a Greek temple can be viewed, and as the ruins are situated high up on a mountain, the views across Souda to the Akrotiri peninsula are spectacular.

Hania – 30 minute drive from Villa Daymer – the spiritual capital of the island is one of the most attractive towns in Crete with it’s bustling Venetian harbour front and network of bustling alleyways and streets. There are a number of museums to visit and an exiting indoor market crammed with fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs and trinkets. It has Venetian and Turkish relics and numerous architectural gems well worth a visit.

Iraklion is a little further afield, but is well worth the visit. Although bigger than Hania it too is crammed with a multitude of architectural sites and the old quarters of the city have particularly charmed some of our guests.

Paleochora is a beautiful, quaint village that has remained unspoilt, possibly due to it’s positioning on the south coast. The village is a sleepy, calm place during the day, with a beautiful sandy beach and small cafes and tavernas. A t night the villages seems to come alive, with the narrow streets being closed and tavernas setting out tables for al fresco eating. The drive to Paleochora is spectacular, taking you through the kakodhiki valley.

Elafonissi, like Paleochora, is accessible from Villa Daymer on the South coast, and again takes you through spectacular mountainous scenery. There is no village here as such, just spectacular, beautiful beaches and aquamarine seas ideal for snorkelling.

Falasarna also has a beautiful beach and a trip here can be combined with a visit to the ruins of the ancient port and city of Falasarna.

Closer to Villa Daymer (a short beautiful drive over the Drapanos highland) lies Georgioulpolis and Lake Kournas. Georgioupolis is a collection of tavernas around a busy square backed by numerous gift and jewellery shops. There are two beaches at Georgioupolis, both sandy and safe to swim from and there is also a pool complex with a restaurant and bar attached that serves good coffee and pastries as well as snacks. Lake Kournas is a spectacular blue lake that is well worth a visit. The lake is bordered by imposing mountains and is home to a range of aquatic creatures including turtles. Pedalos can be hired to explore the lake and you can swim if you can bare the icy mountain water! There are also a small number of tavernas on the lakeside where you can get snacks, drinks and meals.

For those interested in modern history a visit to the Allied war cemetery is a must. Situated on the water’s edge just outside Souda, the cemetery is immaculate and has received many complimentary comments from people who have visited whilst on holiday. There is also the German war cemetery at Maleme, just beyond Platanias.

The area around Villa Daymer is perfect for walking and there are a number of guides to local walks around Plaka, Amyrida and Kalives. The Samaria Gorge on the south coast is a mecca for walkers. The gorge is spectacular and guided walks, including a boat trip, are available through the summer months.

Go Karting is available on the outskirts of Hania and also close by is the Limnoupolis Water Park – fun for all ages!
