Home description
The fastidious English owner of Villa Kali Zoe spent a very long time searching for the perfect plot of land on which to build a villa, and much to our delight he definitely succeeded. With breathtaking uninterrupted views past a small cove, across Souda Bay in its entirety, sweeping along the coastline past the 17th Century hilltop Turkish fort at Aptera, to the majestic White Mountains in the south, there could not be a more beautiful location. The exceptionally large pool, the main terrace that wraps around the front and side of the villa, and the living area and double bedroom all take in these amazing views, as well as the dramatic sunsets. Kali Zoe means “good life” in Greek, and that would definitely be an understatement for the time that you would spend here on your holiday.
This unique villa was designed with great precision and is a gorgeous combination of charming traditional features and complementary modern comforts. The villa is set on one floor that is 14 steps up from the parking area. Local stone has been used for the fireplace and to surround all of the doors and windows, local cypress wood has been used for the high vaulted open beamed ceilings, the kitchen cabinets, the doors, windows, shutters, and the railings around the terraces, local marble was used for the window ledges and dining and coffee table tops, and the elegant dark wood furniture was handmade at the workshop of a local craftsman. As with the rest of the villa, the bathrooms have been finished to a very high standard with pretty white and pale terracotta tiles.
The outside areas at Villa Kali Zoe are not only special because of the stunning views, but also because of the large pool and the beautifully planted colourful garden. The pool terrace is paved with non-slip natural stone and has built-in wood and bamboo umbrellas, as well as sun-beds and a table and chairs. We are absolutely sure that it will be hard to drag yourselves away from this lovely villa, but if you do want to go out for a delicious meal, the Kokkino Horio village taverna and general store are only 700m away, and the beach at Almyrida is only 7 minutes away by car. Kali Zoe has return visitors year after year and it is easy to see why as it is a private romantic retreat with incredible views, that suits not only couples but also small families.

The Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Kali Zoe is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Chania / Kokkino Chorio area
Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are only 600m from Villa Kali Zoe. The family run-taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month or so), which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 3 minutes by car from Villa Kali Zoe is the famous glass blowing workshop. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls.
The coastline below Villa Kali Zoe is famous for its sea caves, and it has Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach. Plaka village square is lined with mulberry trees and is just 1.6km away. It has 3 excellent tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, a sweet shop, and 5 cafes.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 2.8km from Villa Kali Zoe, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office owned and run by Frankie Miles, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
