History and archaeology abounds here. Within a few yards of the villa is a complex of Venetian wells, and within sight (albeit a 20 minute drive away) is the huge ruined Minoan and Roman city of Aptera at Megala Horafia.

Gavalohori village is an ancient and attractive Cretan village just a few minutes drive inland from the coast and only 25 km east of Chania. The town of Rethymnon, with its characteristic Turkish minarets and attractive harbour and leather markets, is 25 km along the coast in the other direction.

The village of Gavalohori stands at the end of a green and wooded valley leading the 3.5 km to the sea at Almyrida. The village is renowned locally for the work of its women's cooperative. These local ladies wish to keep ancient Cretan traditions alive, including the manufacture of hand made lace, silk, pottery and honey.

There are 4 cafenions in the village (including more than one with free wi-fi). At the bottom of the lane from the villa the Gavalianos Kafenes offers local specialities and hospitality to locals and visitors alike, with English spoken. The cafe opposite is the place the local aging male population choose to use to sit and while away the hours playing Tavli (backgammon) and they may well invite you over to take a coffee with them and play a turn.

There are in addition two small supermarkets in the village, both easily walkable from the villa, and both stocking a good range of fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables, bottled, canned and frozen goods to stock the villa freezer. They also sell home brewed raki (the local spirit of choice) and locally pressed olive oil. The village also has an excellent bakery, open all hours and offering a wide range of breads, hand raised cheese and apple pies, the delicious aroma of which snakes its way up the hillside to greet you as you walk down of a morning for warm bread for breakfast !

LOCAL BEACHES:

Almyrida. Only 7 minutes drive from the villa, this is the perfect family beach - shallow, calm, with showers and changing cubicles and with a toilets and a beach bar. Behind the beach is a ribbon of tamarisk trees and then a pretty resort with quiet bars, shops and restaurants.

Georgioupolis. A 20 minute drive towards Rethymnon, this pretty resort has a quiet beach to the western side, beyond the river bridge, and a long but narrow stretch of sand with umbrellas and sunbeds by the new promenade. This beach actually stretches for several miles beyond the resort and is worth driving to for the sheer isolation! Georgioupolis itself has many tourist shops, bars and tavernas as well as mini-golf and several night clubs. The river is still an active fishing port and at the river mouth is a beautifully photogenic white chapel on the rocks.

Kyani Akti. Between Kalyves and Souda, about 20 minutes drive. This sandy beach is only popular with Greeks (and therefore quiet every day except Sunday). There is good surf here for bodyboarding, but it can be cold near the pretty river outlet. There is a lifeguard post, two snack cafes and toilets and changing rooms

Elafonisi. This has to be paradise. Almost no habitation, and for the last few hundred yards, no surfaced road. Shallow sandy lagoons full of water so warm it is like a bath. There are beach bars, umbrellas and sunbeds but no shortage of room to get away from it all. A good 3 hours from the villa through beautiful scenery - an amazing day trip ( make sure you stay after all the coaches have left! )

The Crete region

Gavalochori is a village of the Chania regional unit on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, in Greece. It is located on Cape Drapan in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region. It is named after the Gavalas family who lived here during the reign of the Venetians. Gavalochori is four kilometers from the coast at Almirida. It is a very old village with an interesting history explained in the local Folklore Museum. The population is around 350 but this number swells in the summer months as tourists, relatives and visitors arrive.

The village has many shops including two taverns, two cafes, a pastry shop with cafe bar, the village pre-school, a graphic design Studio, bakery, three grocery stores and a handicrafts shop. There are 14 Greek Orthodox churches in and around the village as well as Venetian arches and wells, Roman tombs and an ancient olive oil factory. Many interesting walks exist around the village.

The village of Gavalohori itself has an interesting history - the name comes from the Gavalas family who originally settled here at the time of the Venetian occupation. As well as the wells, there is a Roman cemetery, a variety of Venetian buildings and several churches.

Chania

Almyrida ( 15 MINS DRIVE) is a resort located in the Apokoronas region of the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Greece. The village is approximately 25 kilometers from Chania, in Chania regional unit. Traditionally a fishing village Almyrida has a long beach that is popular with families. Wind surfers, kayaks, paddle boats and beach chairs can be rented on the beach. There are many hotels, rental rooms, taverns, bars, snack and cafe bars, gift shops, grocery stores and bakeries, all of which are open late into the night in the tourist season. Almyrida is famous for its delicious food, as well as for the shallow waters, ideal for children.

Kalyves ( 20 mins drive) lies about 20 km east of Chania in the Apokoronas area and is linked with GR-90 (E65). It is on the coast at the entrance of Souda Bay. It essentially consists of one long road, with houses opening directly on to it, with the occasional alley behind. The town is bound on one side by the sea and the other by low hills. On Kastelli Hill, east of the town, are the remains of the fortified settlement Castello Apicorono, identified by some scholars as the site of ancient Ippokoronion, which is thought to have given the Apokoronas region its name. In classical and Byzantine times, Kalives is the likely site of Kissamos, one of the ancient city of Aptera's two harbours.

Kalives is the base of the municipality of Armeni, covering 12 other settlements inland. A short walk out of the village to the west is a collection of stone buildings including a taverna and a chapel known as Koumos built by a local man who spent ten years erecting them. Paths are littered with mosaics, walls stuffed with stones in the shape of fish, snakes and other creatures with rough tables and chairs of stone. Before reaching Kalami village, another beach - 'Kyani Akti' is hidden behind fields of bamboo.

Kalyves is a pretty seaside village in the area of Apokoronas in Chania, on Souda Bay, 19 km east of Chania. Kalyves is one of the resorts on Cape Drapanos, along with Almyrida and Plaka, which are famous for their lovely beaches but also their intensive building development. Thousands of British people visit Kalyves every year, not just on holiday but also to buy land and summer villas.pokoronas is one of the most beautiful and greenest parts of West Crete. Here you will find woods, large areas of cultivated land, mountains and hills with small settlements and beautiful, picturesque villages, all well worth visiting for a taste of Cretan nature and traditional Cretan architecture.

"Delightful Holiday Away From The Crowds"

Arrived Chania airport late in the evening – Concerns of finding the villa in the dark, which is tucked away high in the hill side overlooking the pretty village of Gavalachori were soon dismissed, by following the guide notes provided, they directed us swiftly to the gates of Villa Sonia in about 45 Mins. On arrival everything was as we expected and more, the Villa being well equipped with a few stylish touches that made the living space feel that little bit special. The next morning further warmed the heart as the real beauty of the villa position became apparent, an elevated view overlooking the village with a back drop of sun kissed mountains along with the sound of bells tinkling from the roaming sheep on the hillside – Delightful, we spent many an hour just taking in the atmosphere. The pool and the grounds were equally enjoyable with the poolside terrace and barbecue area prettily adorned with colourful shrubs and flowers. The pool was serviced and grounds pampered twice weekly by Steve, a very nice chap indeed, not forgetting the lovely Kerry and Peter who changed the towels and linen who were also extremely helpful. As other guests mention in previous reviews, we too took the leisurely stroll into the village for taverna evenings, mixing this with a 5 min drive to Almyrida for a wider restaurant option. The villa is a 10 minute drive from the main Crete highway making exploring the many stunning beaches of this end of the island most accessible, amongst others we visited Elafonisi and Balos Lagoon , a must if you can.
In Summary a Fantastic Place to stay.

Thank you for your lovely comments and for taking the time to review the Villa. We are so pleased you had an enjoyable stay and look forward to being of service in the future.

"Escape the masses and go to Gavalohori"

If you would like a laid back holiday, away from the hustle and bustle in the tourist areas, you should definitely stay in Villa Sonia. Beautiful villa with breathtaking views, placed in excellent surroundings. Spend the day at the pool, go hiking in the area or simply sit back and enjoy the views, the sea and the silence. At night a 15 minute walk will take you to the village tavernas, where you can have the real-greek food, joining the locals.
