The Crete region

Crete, birthplace of Zeus, is a truly magical island. It has its own distinct character, quite different from other parts of Greece. Famed for its wonderful hospitality and breathtaking natural beauty Crete can provide everything for a perfect holiday. There are countless archaeological sites, particularly from Minoan times, the most famous being the palaces of Knossos and Phaistos.
Summers are long and hot whilst spring and autumn are warm. Winters in Crete are mild with the most rainfall in the west to keep the landscape lush and green until Summer. Crete is an island of sunshine, even in winter there are many warm sunny days.
The prefecture of Chania in the west of Crete is relatively undeveloped and has spectaculary mountains, gorges
and fabulous beaches. The old town of Chania itself is a fascinating place to visit with its picturesque harbour fringed by bars and restaurants with wonderful Ventetian buildings in front of the back drop of the White Mountains.

Chania / Kokkino Chorio area

Kokkino Chorio or 'red village' sits on a hillside overlooking Souda Bay, the White Mountains and beyond Chania to the far west. It is one of many pretty villages in the Apokoronas area and is featured in the film 'Zorba the Greek'.
The village has a traditional taverna and minimarket within easy walking distance from the villa. On the way there is also a glass factory, well worth a visit, where recycled glass is turned into beautiful things.
The village of Plaka is a few minutes drive down the hillside and has cafes, bars and well stocked minimarkets. The little resort of Almirida is just below Plaka with lovely beaches and beachside cafes, restaurants and watersports. Almirida provides everything for a pleasant holiday, catering for families and couples alike. Kalyves, a few minutes further, is a bigger resort and working town with many shops for browsing and buying essentials. Further inland other villages of interest are Gavalochori with its museum showing a traditional Cretan house and Vamos, the hub of the area.
There is, in fact, so much to see and do in the area that it is impossible to write it all here and a book is provided in the villa with many more suggestions!

How to get there

Chania airport is about 35 minutes drive from the villa and has direct charter flights from the UK on Tuesdays during the season. Heraklion airport, about 90 minutes drive along the national highway, has a wider choice of charter options. Monarch, Excel airways, Thomsonfly.com, Thomas Cook and First Choice are the main charter operators.
Easyjet will provide flights to Heraklion from 30th March 2008 and Jet2.com are also flying into Heraklion from Leeds/Bradford this year.
Scheduled flights are offered via Athens by Olympic Airways all year and Aegean Airlines have announced a new service from mid May from Stanstead (via Athens).
Other options are to fly to Athens with BritishAirways and take an internal flight to Crete or to take the ferry service to Souda.
There are many car hire companies to choose from and we are happy to make suggestions.

Further details indoors:
There is a delightful feeling of airiness when entering the house. Downstairs there is a traditional stone arch dividing the comfortable sitting room from the spacious dining room. The separate kitchen is very well equipped including a coffee machine, kettle and toaster. The kitchen door opens onto the side terrace whilst the window has a lovely sea view. The downstairs bedroom has twin beds, fitted wardrobe and its own door to the side terrace. A small shower room is close by. A staircase down leads to a utility room with washing machine, ironing
board and safe. A graceful marble staircase leads to the upper floor where there are two further bedrooms and a bathroom. The larger bedroom has a double bed and the other a single. Both have large, fitted wardrobes and French doors onto the balcony which really has very spectacular views over the sea and mountains.

Thermostatically controlled underfloor cooling keeps the house deliciously cool throughout the hot summer. In early and late season it is changed to heating. Mosquito grilles and ceiling fans are installed throughout the house to ensure a comfortable stay.

Further details outdoors:
French doors open onto a large, covered terrace overlooking the scented herb garden and swimming pool with lovely views over Souda bay. A perfect place for outdoor dining or relaxing in the shade. To the side another covered terrace looks out over the garden to the White Mountains. Steps down lead to the secluded barbecue area with a gas barbecue and second dining area in the garden. Sun loungers and sun umbrellas are provided on the pool terrace.
The villa has a large gate to allow secure, shaded parking close to the house. A pool cover is provided to keep the water temperature warm during the early and late seasons.
