The Crete region

Crete is such a varied island - there are wonderful beaches, lapped by sparkling clear turquoise blue seas. The mountains rear up to over 2500m, split by awesome deep narrow gorges, their tops blisteringly white in the Mediterranean sun. Up in the foothills the views are spectacular, the air is clear, and the spirit is released! On the upper slopes are regimented rows of olive trees, there leaves sparkling grey in the breezes; whilst down on the plains groves of orange orchards scent the air.

Over 5000 years of history await you - from the incredibly designed Minoan palaces, Myceanean Greek fortified towns, whilst beautifully preserved Roman aqueducts and mosaics are close by. There are plenty of examples of elegant Venetian architecture and mighty fortress walls constructed in golden yellow sandstone, while the Turkish fountains and mosques add an exotic eastern atmosphere. Its a place where occident meets orient.

Chania

At Panokosmos you will be near to the wonderful historic town of Chania, with its picturesque harbour, plateia lined with tavernas and little shops, quaint winding alleys which are always delightfully cool and shady. Aptera, with a unique mix of remains stretching from a Minoan temple to the Turkish fort is but 20 minutes drive away. Hike into the mountains, or take a gentle walk in the orange groves are nearby, or a lazy stroll thru a mountain village to while away an hour or two with a glass of wine in the shade of a huge plane tree in a dusty square.

There is a botanical garden to visit, a water park for the children, two wonderful local wineries offering tours and tastings nearby for the grown ups! We can direct you to local artisans – potters, sculptors, jewelry makers, a Greek silk shop; or watch the traditional Cretan knives being made.

You can sample the healthy Mediterranean diet – fresh fruit – sweet strawberries, luscious watermelons, extravagantly rich figs; creamy sheepsmilk yoghurt and goats cheese; the best olive oil in the world. We know the best, out of the way tavernas where you can experience real Cretan fayre, or in meals prepared at Panokosmos by us passionate foodies.
