Crete is haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. For all that, lingering longest in the memory, will be the hospitality of its people who understand the real meaning of filoxenia, the Greek word for 'love of strangers', still a way of life in rural Crete. Here is a land for all temperaments, blending fascinating layers of history with a proud and thriving folklore in a powerfully beautiful setting. Chania / Tavronitis area30 km west of Chania, the village of Tavronitis stands at the point where the north coast road sends an exploratory spur wriggling southwards over the mountains to Paleohora. Tourism still remains pretty low key and the village retains an authentic ambience with particularly friendly shopkeepers delighted to have the opportunity to practise their English. As well as a couple of convenient mini-markets, there’s a butcher, baker and a patisserie, whilst down by the sea are 3 or 4 tavernas strung along the pebbly shore line which stretches some 10km around the bay to Kolymbari notable for its mouth watering choice of harbour side fish tavernas, plus a well stocked supermarket & 3 banks, all with ATM machines. Finally, for fresh fruit, veg & bags of atmosphere visit the Saturday market in Voukoulies, 7km inland. How to get thereThere are two Airports on Crete, Chania (CHQ) on the west of the island and Heraklion (HER) on the east. It takes approx 40 mins from Chania and about 2 hours to drive from Heraklion.
