The Crete region
Still predominately undeveloped Western Crete is characterised by sandy beaches, waterside tavernas, sleepy villages and a profusion of orange, lemon and olive groves framed against the magnificent White mountains. Car hire is essential and will give you the freedom to explore the many beautiful and hidden delights to be found across the region.
A visit to Chania old town and the stunning Venetian harbour is a must. Here you can wander through the atmospheric cobbled backstreets admiring beautiful architecture, wrought iron balconies filled with flowers and tumbling bouganvillea. Before reaching Chania you can stop off at ancient Aptera, this renovated fort has fantastic views towards Chania, Souda Bay and Kalives.
If you are feeling adventurous the Samaria Gorge is well worth the sore feet you will undoubtedly end up with! This gorge is spectacular and will take you around 6 hours to walk through. It is easy to book a trip in the beautiful tourist office in Vamos.
Other places well worth a visit include Rethymno which also has a beautiful Venetian harbour and old town, Argroupoli, Lake Kournas (the only fresh water lake in Crete) and the south coast. This has a completely different feel to the north coast and is reached in around 50 - 60 minutes with a wonderful drive through the mountains. The roads are excellent.
Further afield there is Elefenesis which has warm, clear turquoise waters with pure white sand. Shallow water means you can wade out to explore the numerous little islands. Or you can drive to Chora Sfakion to reach Loutro a picturesque village with access by boat or on foot only. The walk into Loutro is fantastic with spectacular views all the way.
We have a Welcome Pack in the house which contains details of everything to do and see in the local area including the many wonderful beaches. Keen walkers will relish the many amazing trails to be found close to the villa - we have many walks books and maps which are available for guests to use.
This part of Crete really does have something for everyone. In easy distance of the villa there are a variety of water sports, horse riding, crazy golf, 10 pin bowling, a brilliant water park and go karting.
The Cretan climate is typically Mediterranean with mild, sometimes wet winters and long, hot dry summers. We take bookings all year and have had guests at Christmas before now. But if you want to be certain of the sunshine April, May, June, July, September and October are best.
Litsarda is one of the Apokoron villages which are dotted throughout this part of Crete. All have their own charm and are certainly worth exploring if you have time. Vamos is the largest village in the Apokoron area and is a delightful mix of renovated buildings, charming old cobbled streets and beautiful views. It also has a good range of amenities with tavernas, bars, a fantastic bakers, bank, supermarket, general store, bookshop, etc.
Local beach resorts are Almerida, Kalives and Georgioupoli all of which are easily reached by car and definitely worth exploring.
Almerida is the nearest and its shallow waters are excellent for children. It also offers a number of water sports such as wind surfing and kayaking. Originally a fishing village it is a little more built up now but is still pretty laid back and low key.
Georgiopolis is an attractive resort with a lovely lake to the west up the Eucalyptus Avenue where you can see terrapins and beautiful bird life.
Kalives is a working village open all year round with lots of shops, bars and tavernas.
