The Crete region

The Island of Crete is the largest and most southern island of Greece and it enjoys a warm climate and over 300 days of sunshine. Among other things Crete features important historical sites and the famous Cretan hospitality, food and culture.

Chania is a delightful, picturesque, Venetian-influenced town, with quaint narrow cobbled streets and a well-preserved Venetian Harbour, lined with tavernas, restaurants, and many cafes and bars. Chania will certainly charm you with its unique atmosphere.
Heraklion and Rethymnon are ideal destinations for those interested in archeological sites.

The region's magnificent White Mountains are often capped in snow during the winter months and the region offers fantastic opportunities for walkers and nature lovers. The famous Gorge of Samaria is a very popular site, favoured by many visitors who would walk the 18 kilometers down trail.

Chania / Almyrida area

Almyrida Beach is a holiday resort with numerous sandy beaches, with facilities of umbrellas and sun loungers and also offering a variety of water sport facilities, such as surfing (www.ucpa.com/windsurf). There are also several mini markets in the area. A row of traditional tavernas and coffe bars line the sandy beaches, offering a variety of local dishes and fresh fish.

ASPRO is a quiet and charming village, situated only 1.5 killometers from Almyrida Beach. The village has narrow cobble streets. All around you can see olive and fruit trees in abundance and in the quiet of the night you can hear the tinkle of bells from goats grazing on the mountain sides. There are beautiful walks among the green countryside, leading to neighbouring hamlets.

Inland, 2 kms south of Aspro, lies the attractive village of Gavalochori, with traditional tavernas and delicious Cretan food and with an excellent Folklore museum, housed in a beautifully restored Venetian building with Turrkish additions.
5 kms further, will take you to Vamos, the capital of the Apokoronas Region. Vamos has a Co-Opertive, which was founded with the aim of promoting eco-tourism and rebuilding and restoring houses in the village. You must visit the cafe-bar, 'the Liakoto', with its spectacular terrace views and next door, the eco-friendly shop, selling beautifully packaged cheeses, herbes, honey, oil and wine from the region. There are organised walks to Byzantine monasteries and nearby churches. Tourist Office; www.vamossa.gr
Good roads head inland from Vamos leading to numerous pretty villages.

Beyond Almyrida and driving east, you will find small and beutiful villages, such as Plaka, Kokkino Horio (used as backdrop for the film 'Zorba the Greek') , Kefalas and many more.

How to get there

Fly to Chania - Aspro village is 40 minutes drive from the airport.
Flights to Chania are with; Monach, XLA & Thompson and they are available from end of March to end of October from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Belfast airports.

An alternative way to get to Aspo is to fly to Heraklion Airport with all above airlines, plus British Airways. Heraklion is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes drive from Aspro.

From Athens; you can fly with Olympric or Aegian Airlines to Chania airport or alternatively catch a boat from Piraeus to Souda Port (Chania) .

Guestbook for Villa Argo

Dear Amy!
I wanted to say a special thank you for the success of our holiday - a big part in that success was played by your villa in the lovely village of Aspro. The house was perfect inside and out, and we could not get enough of the view from the terrace and sun-roof :).when normally the pictures of rental apartments tend to be better than the reality itself then in this case we got more than expected:)!
Derek and Pam provided a very friendly assistance and gave us good advice regarding shopping for the daily food
It was a holiday to remember and I truly hope we can enjoy your hospitality again next year. Kaie.(July 2009).

Hi Amy and Mervyn,

Thank you so much for the stay we had at your wonderful villa. We enjoyed ourselves so much and for the first time ever, really relaxed.
Spent many days hunting for a house to buy, but couldnt find anything we liked as much as Villa Argo and Aspro
Thank you once again, many regards, Hugh and Shirley(may-july2009)
