Villa Toula, Georgoupolis/Vrisses, Crete ** WiFi Added**

A short distance from the small hamlet of Agios Pantes and the village of Neo Horio, Villa Toula is a beautiful stone house where Toula`s natural talents as a homemaker spill into every corner. Drawing from times being slowly consigned to history, she has created a delightfully romantic Cretan interior with the generous use of embroidered filigree linen curtains, colourful hand-made rugs and lovingly polished furniture. In the living area, a brightly upholstered Cretan Sofa sits comfortably alongside embroidered cushion seats either side of the inset fireplace. For most of the year the French windows will be thrown open to the little furnished, shady terrace under one of the twin arches that adorn the front of the villa, with lovely garden views.

Spanning this open plan area, a wide stone arch separates the high beamed ceiling of the sitting area from the kitchen where old world charm prevails, but far from being a museum piece, every modern convenience can be found amongst the hand built wood cupboards.

The lovely double bedroom has French windows opening onto the second of the covered terrace with flowers growing all around and views across olive groves and onwards to far hillsides. Across the way, in the twin bedroom, a particularly cosy atmosphere has been enhanced by a ladder staircase leading to a false mezzanine floor (parents of small children, please note), useful for storing luggage. The two bedrooms share a white tiled shower room.

Toula's love of nature is conspicuous in the exceptionally pretty garden, which encircles her house. Little box hedges decorate her emerald green lawns and a profusion of roses, jasmine and many other flowers spill out of the flower beds. A covered barbecue house sits under olive trees whilst another gives shade to a stone table and bench, a cool picnic spot by the pool.

This swimming pool terrace, accessed via half a dozen steps is a further delight where the sparkling pool is surrounded by stone sun bathing terraces furnished with sunbeds.A short 5 minute drive from a choice of tavernas and just 15 minutes from a choice of sandy beaches means that it is both a peaceful retreat and a good starting point for exploring the island for couples or families.

The Crete region

Still relatively refreshingly authentic our old favorite West Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here, the magnificent White Mountains bestride the landscape and melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion. This part also boasts some of the island`s best beaches, especially the coast west which is one long 15km stretch of sandy beach broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas, virtually untouched by time or tourism.

Agios Pandes, Crete

The village of Agios Pandes, a small village beside the National Highway. The surrounding area is ideal for those seeking a truly authentic holiday in a part of Crete where the locals still very much rely on the land and not tourism for their survival. The beauty of these remote Cretan mountain villages is the simplicity of life that the locals lead in some of the most picturesque and mesmerizing settings with views of the White Mountains, pine forests, interspersed with vineyards and olive groves. It's still only a short trip by car to the seaside resorts to stock up on supplies or take a dip in the sea, so really is the best of both worlds.

Agios Pandes is a small village spread out along what is known as the 'old road' to Heraklion, parallel to the National Highway and contains just a handful houses, a cafeneon, mini market cum patisserie and a couple of good tavernas. It is a junction point for accessing several villages in the area. West, is the village of Neo Chorio, well known locally for its souvlaki grill in the village square.

Further along is Armeni, with two superb tavernas under the large plane trees opposite the church and continuing along beyond Armeni is the bustling village of Kalives (15mins by car) with its lovely sandy beaches, plenty of tavernas, shops, bank and supermarkets.

Travelling north of Agios Pandes is the village of Vamos where there are several tavernas, a bank, butcher and mini markets. To the east, is the village of Vrisses (15mins by car), an interesting village with the riverbed in the centre and for more of a cosmopolitan town, carry on to Georgiopolis for a cappuccino at one of the many cafes in the square or take a paddleboat up the river in search of turtles on the riverbank. The superb sandy beach of Georgiopolis that stretches out for miles is about 15-20mins from Agios Pandes depending on which patch of beach you stretch your towel out on.

Don't miss visiting the charming village of Fres only a few minutes away, which is dominated by its grand church and village square where the locals sip their coffee and twirl their worry beads and where the tantalizing smell of freshly-baked bread from the quaint traditional bakery permeates the air on weekdays.

5/5

"Secluded and private,absolute bliss."

Villa Toula a little oasis of green in a wonderfull rural setting, yet only a short stroll from Ag Pantes, here there are some very nice places to eat all are different, there is a small mini-market and bakery, very well stocked for its size. Villa Toula is ideal for exploring the area, hills, beaches and local villages. Inside all that you would ever need is more than catered for,the tranquil gardens and BBQ area were a real draw to us as was the pool with shaded areas to escape the heat. The walk back will require a torch {mini-market}but the stars are beautiful, village wine seemed to assist this journey. If you like a rural setting away from the herd then this is for you. Turn left from Toula up the hill,on the left as you enter the village is a two table Taverna, heaven ! Flexible opening and only 10min stroll.
