Home description
Large wrought iron gates welcome you to this veritable garden of Eden, screened by high hedges from the only neighbouring house and just beyond the walnut and shady lemon trees, stands the little house itself, oozing tranquillity. The spacious open plan living room has fitted sofas and at the far end, the immaculate kitchenette has a large fridge freezer, full electric cooker and dining table and chairs. The small double bedroom has a well-appointed en suite bathroom, finished with blue and white tiles. The rear courtyard is a veritable suntrap with juxtaposed on the far side, an elaborate barbecue house and an equally flamboyant 7m x 5m pool. Beyond the house, a flower bordered path stretches some 80 metres to the start of the orange groves. Stone tables and benches are located in shady spots around the garden beneath the pomegranates and kumquat trees. Yianni, the owner calls by every few days to feed the keeps rabbits, chickens and ducks kept in separate outhouses .

The Crete region
As you laze at a sleepy taverna and marvel at the startling clarity of the deep ultramarine sea, sipping ice cold beer or Retsina, you will already have succumbed to the timeless magic of Greece.
Crete, however, is a land apart, a unique island with a vibrancy and sheer diversity, that weaves its own special ‘sirens spell’ on all who visit her. Fringed by long sandy beaches, rocky coves and towering cliffs, the green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of vivid colour as wild flowers run riot through the fields and olive groves.
The spirit of Crete is reflected large in the island’s landscapes, its soaring mountains and fertile plains, in the palaces of the Minoan era and the castles, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. Above all it is in the traditional hospitality of its people with their infectious love of life and enjoyment of simple pleasures. Thus Crete is a land for all temperaments, blending fascinating layers of history with a proud and thriving folklore in a powerfully beautiful setting.
Chania / Kalamaki area
If you would like to stay somewhere within striking distance of Chania and are looking for a double bed, plus peace and quiet in a Cretan Garden of Eden with Noah’s Ark thrown in for good measure, then this is the mixture of metaphors you’ve been looking for! Some 500 metres from the tiny village of Varipetro and reached by a rough track through the olive groves, Maro’s Spitaki (little house in Greek) is destined to launch a thousand postcards!
How to get there
The nearest airport is at Chania approx 40 minutes drive from the villa. Charter flights operate from the UK to Chania on Tuesdays. The other airport on the island is at Heraklion - approx 2 hours easy drive mainly on the north coast highway.
If you prefer to speak to someone to book your flights, we have found Alan Garner at IAG very helpful (mention our name when booking) , you can call Alan on 0845 0710 130 during office hours

Guestbook for Chania, Maro's Spitaki
Maro's Spitaki This was our second stay at Maro's and it is the perfect getaway from it all destination. Despite temperatures being in the high 30s the house always stays cool. The roof sun terrace is the perfect spot to spend the day with some grapevines appropriately placed to provide some much needed shade. The highlight for me is the garden. The only fruit which were ripe were the oranges but later in the season you can enjoy kiwis, plums etc. etc. Having freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs freshly laid (for a townie, collecting eggs straight from the hens was a new experience) is a breakfast to remember. The geese, chickens and rabbits are all friendly! A car is essential but it is easy to catch a bus from the main road to Chania and take a taxi back (about 10mins). Highly recommended. Lynn Cullen, Jun 2003
Joanne and Gary - Maro's Spitaki - Jul 2008 Absolutely fabulous accommodation and particularly relaxing and restful.
Jim - Maro's Spitaki - Aug 2007 I just wanted to say thanks for a superb location in Maro's Spitakis. We had a wonderful and memorable holiday and will certainly consider using yourselves and indeed Maro's Spitakis in future.
Mr Blacker - Maro's Spitaki - Jul 2007 The accommodation was excellent and the owners very hospitable
Wilkinson Family - - Away from the hussle and bussle, quiet and peaceful, but a convenient distance from ameneties. I dont't really want anyone else to know about it !
