Milo Petra I and II, Douliana

Park in the small village square and walk passed the traditional cafenion, at the beginning of a narrow village street and enter a gateway to discover the secret hidden from eye to passersby of this ancient mill house. For here in the courtyard you are met by a sparkling pool with wonderful rural views from its terraces. Converted with oodles of Cretan charm into two higgledy piggledy houses with cool stone floors and wood beamed ceilings, each house is perfect for 2 guests with a sense of fun and a love of all things Cretan. Leaving the lovely traditional cafenion on the square aside, there are two excellent tavernas in Douliana and a small minimarket for life's essentials. A holiday here is all about relaxing and soaking up village life - but for a little exercise there are several walks from Douliana on paths which lead to the village of Gavalohori or down to sea at Almirida or Kera Beach.

Milo Petra I

The main entrance to Milo Petra I, off a narrow village street which is the start of a footpath that leads down into the valley where a tiny chapel is hidden away, opens into a lovely courtyard with built in seating and a very large table under the mulberry tree, a BBQ and large old fashioned sink. From this courtyard, the arched entrance door leads into a hallway, at the far end of which is the compact kitchen, with a two ring mini cooker and large fridge freezer.

Please note the word compact ie ideal for preparing a breakfast, snacks, a salad or pasta but you'll need to leave any real cooking to the proprietor of the kitchens at one of the two nearby excellent tavernas. If, however, you have been sufficiently organised to put together a full meal you needn't worry about the serving of it as there is space a plenty around the large wooden table in the dining area under a huge archway off the hall.

Another stone archway leads into the lovely living area, furnished in a manner typical of many Cretan village homes with a fireplace, lace edged table linen and good solid furniture. If you eschew communication by cyber world and your preference is for more traditional methods of communication then postcards home can be composed at a small desk perfectly positioned in front of a window which overlooks the pool. A door off the living area (more stone archways) leads out onto the patio that is shared with the Milopetra II guests.

The lovely pool area with sun beds on its terrace and a long narrow table and chairs set under a network of vines is an ideal place to relax and unwind dining whilst listening to the village life around you and taking in the views down the lush green valley towards Gavalohori.

Back inside, the original mill stones are decoratively deployed in the ground floor shower room (watch your head on the doorway, if you're above average height). Wooden stairs lead up from the living room to the light and spacious gallery double bedroom where, like Jacob's ladder wooden stair cases continue to zigzag on upwards**.

French doors from the bedroom lead to a large balcony with views across the village clay tiled roofs to the countryside beyond, as well as a flight of stone steps that lead down to the main courtyard and around to the pool.** The staircases lead to a further 2 gallery bedrooms. The bedrooms lack privacy so we consider this house to be suitable for a maximum occupancy of 2, however they could be used by older children at no extra cost or very good friends.

The Crete region

Still relatively refreshingly authentic our old favorite West Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here, the magnificent White Mountains bestride the landscape and melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion. This part also boasts some of the island`s best beaches, especially the coast west which is one long 15km stretch of sandy beach broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas, virtually untouched by time or tourism.

Douliana, Crete

20km east of Chania with truly spectacular views of Crete's White Mountains, this idyllic little village of Douliana perched atop a hill overlooking Souda Bay is surrounded by olive groves and terraced farmland criss-crossed by drystone walls and ancient Byzantine donkey paths. There's a well stocked mini-market, taverna and a rustic little kafenion in the tiny village square and from here narrow little streets with whitewashed walls garlanded by flowers wend their way to the church. On the edge of the village you will also find a delightful little taverna serving authentic and very tasty Cretan fare. From here, a track bends its way down the hillside to the nearest beach, which is just under 3 km and a wonderful walk. For the less energetic the track is also navigable by car if you take it nice and slowly over the rough spots. For a good selection of tavernas and shops of all descriptions, Kalives 5km away is the best choice although Almirida 4km distance, also has some excellent tavernas and lovely sandy beaches.

Less than 5km inland, the attractive villages of Gavalohori and Vamos offer a further choice of tavernas and some interesting local craft and produce shops. We consider car hire is essential when staying in Douliana.
