Clifftop Villa is one of the more opulent villas on Crete and commands a breathtaking position directly above the sea. Set on the outskirts of Plaka, the property is a hidden corner of peace and tranquility, just a short drive from the excellent amenities and sandy beaches in the coastal villages that line Souda Bay. Unique avant-garde design seamlessly brings the living area outdoors by way of vast expanses of floor to ceiling glass, in the living room and all of the bedrooms, that perfectly frame the picture postcard views of the crystal clear turquoise sea. We cannot praise highly enough this villa of distinction and class, which is superbly appointed and tastefully decorated. The interiors of the villa are impressive and spacious to say the least. Spread over 3 floors, every bedroom, and the living room/kitchen have incredible sea views and sliding doors that lead out to a multitude of different balconies and terraces, with a choice of sun or shade, affording peace and privacy to individual guests from groups and large families who like to holiday together whilst still enjoying some alone time. All of the balconies and terraces are adorned with an array of outdoor furniture including a dining table and chairs, couches, coffee tables, sun-loungers, and deck chairs which beckon you to do nothing more strenuous than sitting back with a chilled drink whilst taking in the incredible views. These views can also be fully appreciated from the living room and all of the bedrooms. One of our guests said that "when you are in bed at Clifftop Villa the water is so close that it feels like you are actually lying on a boat on the ocean". Each of the bedrooms has its own sink set on a vanity unit, separate toilet room, and wet room with a rain shower and floor embedded with smooth pebbles that incorporates the seaside theme of the villa.

No expense has been spared by the artistic and stylish Norwegian owner who travels regularly to the Far East for her job. Whilst in India and China she handpicked works of art, interesting pieces of furniture, and luxurious and colourful fabrics, and sent them back to Clifftop Villa to create a superb home of special character. The villa owner is an excellent cook so it did not surprise us at all to find a fantastic kitchen with a large inventory. All of the appliances are modern and of excellent quality including: a washing machine, a dishwasher, a ceramic hob, built-in oven and extractor fan, a large American style fridge/freezer complete with water filter and ice maker, a microwave oven, a toaster, a kettle and a coffee maker. Other modern comforts include internet access, a 32" flat screen TV, a DVD player, satellite receiver box with foreign channels in English and other languages, hairdryers, aluminium doors and windows, electric shutters, mosquito screens, and air conditioning units throughout. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and for the cooler nights early and late season, and there is solar powered hot water or a back-up emersion heater.

Equal attention has been paid to the outside area which has a main gate, a driveway, a private parking area and a staircase to the pool. Following the natural contours of the land, and stepping down the hillside, the pool and barbeque terrace is set on a lower level, dramatically perched on a cliff over the sea. A comfortable poolside lounging area is shaded by a cypress wood pergola topped with sail material, and furnished with elegant couches and plump cushions that offer the perfect setting in which to read a good book or sit back and enjoy the breathtaking vistas. Vying for attention with the inviting, longer than average swimming pool and relaxing lounging area are the long marble topped dining table and the built-in barbeque, sink and work surfaces where many fun and delicious al-fresco family meals will be grilled against the backdrop of the azure Mediterranean sea and sky. Poolside relaxation on sun-loungers under brilliant sunshine and sun umbrellas during the day transforms easily into night time romanticism thanks to enchanting lighting and a crystal clear star-filled night sky.

The majority of the plot has been left natural and is a mass of vibrant colour in the Spring when the wild flowers are in full bloom. However, the bank leading from the ground floor of the villa to the pool terrace has been planted with oleander, African daisies and a mass of "hottentot fig", and the rear terrace of the villa has a natural dry stone wall and a multitude of pots planted with greenery. With only one immediate neighbour (who always seems to be out working), Clifftop Villa is pleasingly private whilst still being surprisingly near to a host of amenities and the sandy beach in Almyrida. A 20 minute easy stroll along a quiet track through olive groves brings you to Plaka village square where you can enjoy a mouth watering meal at one of 3 tavernas or the Italian restaurant, or buy all of the essentials from one of the 2 very well stocked mini markets. A few minutes in the opposite direction along the track brings you to the some fascinating rock formations which have been shaped over time by the sea, the salt flats where rock salt dries out naturally in the sun, and a small rocky cove where you can swim from the rocks.

The Crete region

Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.

As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.

Clifftop Villa is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.

The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.

The Chania / Almyrida area

The main square in Plaka is only 1km from Clifftop Villa and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 5 tavernas, an Italian restaurant, 2 well stocked mini markets, a hair dresser and 7 cafes.

The lovely village of Almyrida is only 2.3km from Clifftop Villa, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 5 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops,a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, guided walking tours, and guided coach excursions.

A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 40 minutes away by car.

Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.

All our clients receive a substantial free welcome pack (it is possible to upgrade to a deluxe hamper for an additional charge of €50.00), a villa information book, and detailed directions to all of the sights from the guide book 'Crete on the Road' by Frankie Miles.

A local adviser, speaking English, Greek, and French will be on hand offering assistance and information during office hours and 24/7 emergency assistance.

All services and the use of air conditioning and other equipment, as advertised, (except for internet access) are included in the weekly rental rates shown on this web site.

There is a twice weekly maid service, a twice weekly towel change, and a once weekly linen change included in the rental rates.

We do ask that reservations are made well in advance in order to avoid disappointment.

Children are most welcome in all our properties and we provide a High Chair and Cot loan service for a small fee, but we do ask that Children are supervised at all times whilst around and in the Swimming Pool.

For the 2013 season WIFI internet access is available for up to 5 laptops and/or tablets. Top up cards for air-time will need to be purchased locally or from our representative in resort.

To secure this villa we ask for a deposit payment of 20% on bookings over 1000.00 Euros or 200.00 Euros on booking under 1000.00 Euros, with the final balance payable in full 10 weeks before your arrival date.

As with all our villas on the island, we can arrange taxi transfers and/or car hire through reputable companies.
