About the home
Villa Apo Petra is fully air-conditioned in all 3 bedrooms and main living area. For the cooler months there is also central heating for comfort. We have everything covered for families with TVs/DVDs in all bedrooms, a small selection of toys, games and pool/beach inflatables as well as a volleyball set. There is also a PlayStation 2 in the lounge with plenty of games and a portable iPod station you can use either in the house or down at the pool (our children never get bored and irritable!).
For adults there is a large selection of DVDs to watch should you wish to have a night in. There are reading books and maps on the area and local recommendations for restaurants and places of interest. Apart from all that, the many outside seating areas with the stunning views of the sunrise, sunset and in the evening to look up and see the amazing blanket of stars overhead is enough to fill your time over a glass of wine or a local Raki.

Further details indoors:
Villa Apo Petra is tastefully decorated and was furnished to a high standard before we decided to rent out. We take pride in our Villa and we have a very thorough and capable maintenance company look after it for us. The layout is 2 bedrooms on the 1st floor - the master with a king size bed and a single day bed and a twin bedded room (two single beds). The main shower room, WC, washbasin (and washing machine) is also this floor.
Downstairs is the kitchen/indoor dining area and lounge. An additional shower room with WC and basin is also the ground floor along with the 3rd bedroom with king-size bed.
Additional to the bedrooms above we have available to guests a travel cot for babies and, if required, a self inflating single airbed for a child. Other children's equipment include a high chair, baby bath and a fold up stroller.
Further details outdoors:
Villa Apo Petra stands in half an acre of land. We have 3 terraces/balconies attached to the house. One off the master and twin room which is beautifully tiled and perfect for morning coffee watching the sun rise. From the lounge, there is a pergola covered balcony, again, tiled with a lockable gate which leads to the side of the property and out onto the lower gravelled eating area, an outside dinning table and chair set is located on this balcony which seats 8 along with a quality (Weber) gas BBQ for alfresco cooking. The 3rd terrace is off of the downstairs bedroom and ideal for drinks with a marble table and chairs. Planting is ongoing at the property and includes citrus trees and oleander to add colour and enhance the surroundings of this beautiful setting. The pool is 40sq.m, has its own shower, and is furnished with high quality loungers and umbrellas for shade. The pool commands a fantastic position to lay back and look out to sea, watch the birds of prey soar overhead and listen to the local shepherd herding his sheep. The pool is not shut off, therefore guests with children unable to swim will need to supervise!
7 minutes drive away from the villa is the blue flagged beach resort of Almyrida. The gentle sloping sand makes it very safe for small children. The more active holidaymakers can make use of the windsurfing school, take out a catamaran or snorkel off the rocks. Kalives is a 15 mins drive and larger than its sister Almyrida with 3 main stretches of beach. If you prefer a quiet cove there is one just 5 mins drive from us, secluded, picturesque and ideal for diving and snorkeling. We supply our guests with a very comprehensive Information Pack with recommendations of things to do and places to visit on trips out as well as everything you need to know about the villa and the area to make the most of your time in Crete.

The Crete region

Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Apo Petra is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
The Chania / Kokkino Chorio area
Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are just a short walk (or 2 minute drive) from Villa Apo Petra. The family run traditional taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area.
During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month or so), which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village center. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn.
Also located in the in the village is the famous glass blowing workshop. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls.
Directly behind the Villa, further up the mountain, you will see the old WW2 German look out post. Upon further inspection you can meander down the stairs deep inside the mountain where you will see the rooms used for storing supplies, sleeping and commanding military operations. There are numerous caves inside (you will need a good torch!) and the stairs eventually bring you out into the open space where there stands a tiny picturesque church "The Church of St George" which was erected in place of the original church building which was destroyed in the war - however it's ruins still stand proud. A monument marking those that died from the Village and surrounding area also resides here. This really is a fascinating piece of history right on your doorstep.

Guestbook for Villa Apo Petra
JAMES & EMMA FROM SO'TON: We had a lovely time in your villa and particularly enjoyed Crete. What spectacular views! The place was really up together and we thought you've got great attention to detail in terms of facilities for guests.
OKSANA FROM AUSTRALIA: We loved your villa and the location and in fact all of Crete. We travelled around quite extensively in our hire car even over the White Mountains to the southern coastline. We would return to stay at the villa sooner rather than later if only Australia were not so far away. Thank you
RENEE FROM GERMANY: We really enjoyed our stay at your villa. The house and pool are beautiful. I still remember the sound of the goats and sheep with their bells. Thank you for letting us enjoy this time at your home.
ANN FROM HALIBURTON: The villa was great. Everything was very well appointed. Lots of space to escape to another balcony or room for some quiet time. Our sons loved the Ipod station & PS2!
