Crete is the largest and most famous Greek island. Birth place of El Greco and many other Great Greek writers like Nikos Kazantzakis and Politicians like Eleftherios Venizelos. Crete according the Mythology was the birth place of Zeus. On the island of Crete bloomed the Minoan civilization witch remains are to be seen at the Palaces of Knossos and Festos.
Crete is situated on the southern tip of the Aegean Sea. The coastline presents profound geographical formations, giving Crete over 900 miles of coastline. The main city and Port of Crete is Heraklion with its Venetian Castle at the port. Other cities are Rethymno ,Chania ,Agios Nikolaos ,Ierapetra ,Sitia and many small villages and tourist resorts.
A journey across Crete is blessed by the wafting scents of the spring flowers growing in the courtyards of the houses. Here generations of Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks, Jews, and Egyptians have lived. Here you can watch the glorious sunsets from the ancient harbor at Falasarna, or the Castle at Gramvousa.
History is alive in Crete; it is ultimately a story of the tastes of the spices of the east, of unique wild greens and herbs, of the blessed olive oil and the wine. Here at the crossroads of civilization many memories are kept alive and many elements of other cultures are still a part of the everyday life of the Cretan people today.
Crete with more then 300 days of sunshine has a lot of attractions that makes the island as one of the most visited in the Mediterranean.
The Chania / Maheri area
Chania is a wonderful port town that is a popular tourist destination for shopping and sightseeing. It has many nice restaurants and contemporary cafés. Its old town has various souvenir ships, as well as craft and art shops that tourists really enjoy. The climate here in Chania is beautiful. The summers of April until October are warm with cloudless skies. And even if most days are hot and dry, the cool breeze relieves them.
Then, during the winter, seasonal rains and occasional frosts are experienced. Tourists can visit the Archaeological Museum of Chania, which contains many historical items from as far back as the fifteenth century B.C. Ancient jewellery, clay tablets, and mosaics are displayed here. The Byzantine Museum of Chania is also full of historical relics. It is located inside the Church of San Salvatore.
The village of Maheri is in the area of Apokoronas,23 km from Chania. This area is full of green regions, sandy beaches and breathtaking view. The village is considered to be one of the best preserved of the traditional villages of Crete. It is classified by the Ministry of Culture as a typical Greek village of extraordinary natural beauty. Amphitheatre built on the side of a mountain at an altitude of 160 m, between two gorges, it is one of the historical villages at the foot of the White Mountains.
This village is especially beautiful because of the enormous perpendicular rock on its west side which holds the white chapel of Saint-John in a split in the rock as well as the rich vegetation that covers the surrounding hills. On the east side of the village square there is a small stone theatre with the capacity for seating 500 people comfortably where cultural events take place each summer.
