Maria's Village House
About the home
Maria's village house is a traditional village house with modern facilities, and Maria’s Cretan welcome.
Within easy reach of the Venetian town of Chania on north western Crete.
The house is situated on the edge of the traditional Cretan village of Douliana surrounded by pine forest and olive groves.
On the ground floor level are the entrance doors into the living area with traditional Cretan day bed, corner fireplace with wood burning stove and large solid wood dining table. You then pass through the stone arch into the kitchen area with cooker, washing machine and small dishwasher, ample cupboard space and worktops, the large storage fridge/freezer, giving filtered cold water and ice for those cool summer drinks. Leading off the living area, to the left is the main bedroom with large double bed, en-suite shower room and large fitted wardrobes, to the right is the main bathroom with corner bath and shower.
The hallway leads to the 2nd bedroom with twin beds; both bedrooms have air- conditioning. From the living area there is a staircase to the upper floor lounge with 2 large comfortable sofas, large ingle-nook fireplace, satellite and Greek TV and DVD. WI-FI internet is available in the house, garden and courtyard areas.
The upper lounge has a large terrace to the rear of the house with spectacular views across the pine forest to the Cretan sea. The front balcony has views over the olive groves with the famous White Mountains as the backdrop.
The outside of the house, at the front, is a courtyard garden and barbeque area, a passage way through a stone arch to the rear courtyard with heated hydro spa pool. The pool (4m by 2m) is designed for the enjoyment of a relaxing hydro spa massage, or just to cool off in the hot summer days. For swimming there are some of the best blue flag beaches on Crete within 5-10mins. drive from the village.
To the rear of the house is the garden with fruit trees of peach, nectarine, lemon, plum, bananas and more. There are also herbs that Maria grows, to use in cooking her traditional Cretan recipes learnt from her mother, as passed down through generations of her Cretan family.
Whilst staying at Maria’s Village House you will regularly see Maria tending her garden and flowers. She takes great pride in looking after the house and garden, and David, her husband, will be happy to help and advise you on local customs and places of interest, to enable you to experience living in a traditional village house in the historically protected village of Douliana.
Douliana is still one of the villages to enjoy Cretan lifestyle, with the old cafeneon in the village square, a traditional Cretan taverna and small restaurant. The post and fresh bread are delivered to the cafeneon daily, there is also a small mini-market for essentials, all within easy walking distance. Larger supermarkets are available within a short drive of the village.
Sit in the small village square and take a coffee or ouzo from the cafeneon, and listen to the sounds of silence, interrupted by birds singing, sheep rustling in the olive grove, and the occasional discussion by the villagers about anything and everything.

Enquire nowThe Crete region
Still relatively refreshingly authentic Western Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here the magnificent white mountains dominate the landscape, and the melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion.
This area also boasts some of the island's best beaches, long stretches of sandy beaches broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas, virtually untouched by time or tourism.
The Chania / Douliana area
Douliana is some 20km east of Chania with spectacular views of Crete's white mountains, this idyllic little village perched on a hilltop overlooking Souda Bay is surrounded by pine forests, olive groves and terraced farmland criss-crossed by drystone walls and ancient Byzantine donkey paths, there are several cave churches left over from the Turkish invasion, Douliana celebrates it's own cave church of St.John every 29th of August, when this sleepy little village truly comes to life.
Chania and the surrounding area has some of the most natural Archaeological sites, and museums to be explored.
The Venitian harbour of Chania is the center of activity with harbourside tavernas, cafes and bars serving a cosmopolitan nightlife, not to be missed.

What can one say? This rental was far better than we had anticipated, the pictures did not do justice to the property . The house was full of traditional Greek character but also had the mod cons. Presented to a high quality. Excellent location for experiencing the local Greek villages or for travelling the west and central areas of this beautiful island. The owners were attentive and helpful but not intrusive and were only too willing to help with any questions about the area. Excellent recommendation for local tavernas. We had a marvelous holiday here and will hopefully return to enjoy the hospitality of Maria and David before very long. Thank you both again for helping to make this stay so enjoyable. |

The house exceeded our expectations, it is exceptionally well equipped and spotlessly clean. David and Maria could not have been more helpful and welcoming. We arrived pale and stressed and left completely relaxed and lightly tanned. The house is in an ideal location if you want to relax, saunter up to one of the two tavernas in the village and enjoy the sounds of the sheep progressing through the trees. The house has views from every window and terrace of the mountains, forest and sea... they are stunning. About 3 km away are the sandy beaches of Kalives and Almyrida perfect for a dip in the sea. The house is also an ideal base to explore the many historical sights of Crete. I would definitely go back again. |

We stayed ( we were two couples of friends) one week in Maria's House... we wish we could have stayed longer! First, David and Maria, the owners, are very nice and helpful hosts : since the first mail exchange, till the sad departure, everything was perfect. We only had a little problem with the sink in the kitchen : it has been solved two hours later, after a phone call to David. The house is great, big enough for maybe 6 persons : an ancient typical cretan house, nicely decorated with all the modern comfort. The garden with the large enough pool tastes like paradise! You can pick up the fruits and vegetables (tomatoes of course, but even bananas) and then you feel like Adam and Eve! From the terrasse, you can see the Mediterranean Sea! The BBQ is terrific! Douliana is a small village, not too big, not too small : everyone there is so welcoming! We had the luck to hear a cretan music concert in front of the cute littlle city hall one night during our stay, drinking cretan wine, eating souvlakis : suddenly, you feel like you are at home... Chania is not far, you can go in the center of this city in half an hour if you'are fed up with the three beaches in the area of Maria's house wich are nice and different from each other. There are so many good things to say about this fabulous house and our guests... We'll go back to Maria and David's house... sooner or later! Thanks again for everything. |
