The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
Lying in the French speaking Canton of Valais Champex-Lac is ideally located for easy access to both the French and Italian Alps. The canton of Valais produces some of the best wine in Switzerland and is renown for its cuisine.
Champex-Lac is a traditional mountain village sitting at a height of 1500 mts nestling in the shadow of the mountain of "La Breya". However it is only a 20 minute drive to the historic town of Martigny that contains the ruins of a roman amphitheatre, the world famous Pierre Gianadda Foundation as well as street cafes and restaurants.
An idyllic and tranquil retreat high up in the Swiss mountains, Champex Lac offers a picturesque village surrounded by woods. It is an ideal location to wind down from the pressures of the modern world. This beautiful Swiss village has a range of bars and restaurants for a morning coffee and croissant or a relaxing meal with a glass of local wine. If you feel like stretching your legs you can stroll around the lake or take one of the dozens of local walking paths that are varied enough to suit all levels of ability. Champex Lac is a wonderful place for families who can hire boats, use the lake side play park, swim, play tennis, cycle and in the winter skate on the lake, downhill ski or ski de fond.It is also in a close proximity to many of the most popular resorts in Swtizerland, it is only 20 minutes from Le Chable, the village below Verbier (35 mins drive). From here you can get the Ruinette bubble onto the four valley slopes, accessing almost 500km of skiing.
Champex Lac area
Champex-Lac is a wonderful sports ground both in summer and winter and it is a peaceful holiday spot for families or couples regardless of age! The lake is the focal point of the village adding summer activities such as rowing, swimming, pedalos and fishing to the array of winder activities. Plenty of skiing options above 2000m provide a reliable snow cover.
There is plenty of wonderful sightseeing within an hours drive, including historic castles, botanical gardens, internationally reputed art galleries and music festivals, shopping, golf, mountain biking, sailing, boat trips on lac lemain, excellent cuisine, wine tasting and thermal baths.
Champex is well served with restaurants, bars, a small supermarket, 2 boulangeries and a chacuterie. There is also a sports shop which sells & rents ski/hiking/climbing equipment. Internet facilities are available at one of the hotels. A branch of the Swiss ski school operates in the village in the winter & guides can be organised from Maison du Sport Verbier. Champex never fails to captivate its visitors who leave touched by its charm & refreshed by its tranquillity.
Champex provides excellent skiing opportunities for all levels & is best recommended for beginners, intermediates, families and skiiers looking for challenging offpiste and tree skiing. The ski touring is particulary good. The pisted areas are served by 4 lifts and covers 25km of varied uncrowded terrain, from a level of 2,200m at La Breya. Its north facing aspect provides a long season with good quality snow that many south facing resorts lack late in the season. Skiiers from nearby resorts, such as Verbier come to Champex to enjoy the uncrowded off piste where fresh snow can be found long after a snow fall.
With the purchase of a Valais Ski Card, and a driving time of approximately 30 mins, the extensive areas of the 4 valleys and the Grand St Bernand area can be accessed from Verbier (via Le Chable) and Super St Bernard, with the latter offering excellent off piste possibilities. Within an hours drive, the Swiss Port du Soleil and the Chamonix Valley can also be enjoyed.
