The Swiss Alps region

The Valais offers some of the best ski resorts in the world. From halfpipe to descents on virgin snow: the Valais mountains are perfect for everyone. Every day mountain railway employees groom 2800 kilometres of pistes to provide unparalleled skiing conditions. The latest cable cars and chairlifts bring skiers to the top of the runs comfortably and quickly. The Valais is famous for its many sunny days – and for its ample snow. The pistes extend to 3800 m, and many of them can be skied during the summer. This is heaven on earth for skiers and snowboarders.

The Valais is a hiker's paradise in winter. Its 1000 kilometres of immaculately prepared winter trails invite hikers to leisurely strolls or athletic climbs in an unparalleled setting. With the winter sun as your companion, you can wander through silent snow-covered forests and over magnificent sunny terraces featuring fantastic views. This is as close as you can get to the high peaks and majestic glaciers of the Valais Alps. A steaming cup of schnapps and coffee or hot chocolate welcomes contented hikers in a snug mountain hut at the end of the day.

The Valais has a trail for every hiker. Up high peaks, through fragrant larch forests, along watercourses, over suspended bridges, by mule paths or vineyard trails. Over 8000 kilometres of signposted hiking paths wait to be explored. Countless high routes and circuits lead through lush alpine meadows, across rushing mountain streams, past deep-blue tarns and up peaks with magnificent views. With a little luck, hikers may encounter marmots, chamois or mountain goats. And certainly there will be mountain restaurants with sunny terraces offering spectacular views and delicious Valais specialities.

Well-signposted cycle trails, terrific routes over mountain passes and adventurous alpine roads invite visitors to enjoy the Valais by bike. Routes lead through vineyards, valleys and gorges, up steep trails to high summits and on panoramic roads over impressive passes. Travelling by bike is one of the best ways to experience the Valais, allowing riders to choose their own pace. There is something here for everyone: leisure riders, road racers, mountain bikers and downhill specialists. The unparalleled Valais topography offers bike riders everything they desire.

Champex Lac

Originally a small settlement of mountain huts and barns, La Fouly has been a year-round community since only 1965, when the access road began to be cleared in winter.

The Val Ferret is an outstanding hiking region, with views to well-known peaks like the Dolent, Tour noir and Aiguille d'Argentière. It is also a stage of the celebrated Tour du Mont Blanc trek and the newer but equally stunning Tour du Saint Bernard. Visitors can experience the unadulterated beauty of the mountain world here. For those who wish an alternative to a hotel can spend the night sleeping on straw.
