Residence Le Grand Combin
About the home
Champex Lac enjoys a unique setting, situated on a col between the foothills of the mountains around the Trient glacier, part of the Mont Blanc area and the totally isolated Catogne. This beautiful family resort provides majestic tranquillity.
Residence ‘Le Grand Combin’, situated on the edge of the pretty lac de Champex was originally a Victorian hotel and in 2007 was totally renovated to provide 8 apartments. The internal floor area is 123sqm with 18sqm of balcony, providing stunning views over Les Grand Combins, Mont Blanc Massif, Lac de Champex and Les Dents du Midi. The south and east facing aspect of the property provides natural light from dawn to dusk making the open living pace a bright and warm area. There is parking immediately both outside and inside the building, with lift access direct to the apartment.
The apartment is decorated and furnished to a very high standard, with solid wooden floors throughout save for tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen. Except for the French farm oak dining table, all the wooden furniture is of a contemporary style made of Brazilian waxed pine. The apartment has a home from home feel, with an emphasis on leisure and comfort in a contemporary context. Dimmer lights and a wood burning fire add ambience and warmth to the living room. Outdoor summer furniture is provided for outdoor dining and enjoyment of the exceptional views.

The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region

Diversity in every aspect of life is what makes Switzerland such an interesting place to visit. Its four official languages reflect its diversity of culture, as does its wide range of traditional customs.
Switzerland has an excellent tourist infrastructure, catering for a range of interests. In addition to its stunning geography and its alpine sports, Switzerland boasts a thriving arts scene, with its architects in particular achieving world-wide acclaim. Art, theatre, film and music play a big part in Swiss life and there are many exhibitions and festivals of international repute to enjoy. Wellness holidays are a big attraction as an alternative or supplement to the traditional alpine sports.
The canton of Valais, which is situated in the south west of Switzerland, is a fascinating land of contrasts blessed with an exceptionally mild climate, where the number of sunny days per year is well above the national average. This enchanting "holiday kingdom" is situated at the heart of the Alps, stretching from the gleaming waters of the Rhône at its centre to the legendary mountain peaks that never fail to entice skier, mountaineers and charm nature lovers. The beauty of the region is enhanced by the subtle interaction of ice and sun, of North and South.
Valais is steeped in history and culture and is home to the Montreux Jazz festival. The world renown Gianadda Foundation is situated Martigny, which also houses many art galleries and museums. Some of the best skiing in the world is found in the west Valais region, accommodating skiers of all levels. For relaxation and serenity at any time of the year, there are a number of wellness facilities throughout the canton, with the nearest to Champex-Lac situated at Saillon, some 25 mins by car. For those seeking an active non winter holiday, a variety of sports can be enjoyed, including golf, mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, sailing, paragliding, Walkers can enjoy the long hiking season from March to November and the more extreme athletes can participate in the Mont Blanc Marathon, a 3 day run through the mountains which goes through Champex-Lac.
The Champex Lac area
Champex is quite unique - its stunning location gives the sense of unspoilt wilderness yet benefits from its proximity to the Rhone Valley, France and Italy. Its offers many possibilities for a fantastic all year round holiday, from peace and tranquillity to action packed mountain sports.
Further information on the resort and its activities can be viewed on "www.champex.ch" & "www.champex.info" where you will also find a photo library.
Skiing in the winter and walking in the summer are the traditional past times, but there is so much more to enjoy. The scenery is breathtaking and there is much to explore and enjoy - there is something for everyone.
There is plenty of wonderful sightseeing within an hours drive, including historic castles, botanical gardens, internationally reputed art galleries and music festivals, shopping, golf, mountain biking, sailing, boat trips on lac lemain, excellent cuisine, wine tasting and thermal baths.
Champex is well served with restaurants, bars, a small supermarket, 2 boulangeries and a chacuterie. There is also a sports shop which sells & rents ski/hiking/climbing equipment. Internet facilities are available at one of the hotels. A branch of the Swiss ski school operates in the village in the winter & guides can be organised from Maison du Sport Verbier. Champex never fails to captivate its visitors who leave touched by its charm & refreshed by its tranquillity.
Champex provides excellent skiing opportunities for all levels & is best recommended for beginners, intermediates, families and skiiers looking for challenging offpiste and tree skiing. The ski touring is particulary good. The pisted areas are served by 4 lifts and covers 25km of varied uncrowded terrain, from a level of 2,200m at La Breya. Its north facing aspect provides a long season with good quality snow that many south facing resorts lack late in the season. Skiiers from nearby resorts, such as Verbier come to Champex to enjoy the uncrowded off piste where fresh snow can be found long after a snow fall.
With the purchase of a Valais Ski Card, and a driving time of approximately 30 mins, the extensive areas of the 4 valleys and the Grand St Bernand area can be accessed from Verbier (via Le Chable) and Super St Bernard, with the latter offering excellent off piste possibilities. Within an hours drive, the Swiss Port du Soleil and the Chamonix Valley can also be enjoyed.

A beautiful, spacious, well maintained apartment with stunning views from the balconies. The alpine village and the surrounding areas of Champex-Lac are a walkers paradise. Champex is well positioned for the Western Rhone valley, Chamonix and St Bernard Pass, also within a 20 minute drive of Martigny which is a very pleasant town with plentiful amenities. |

Guestbook for Residence Le Grand Combin
"In the five years that I have owned my apartment, I have been very lucky to have received many guests from all over the world, all of whom have marvelled at what Champex has to offer. One family has rented the apartment all winter, for five seasons in a row which is says alot about Champex and the apartment". The owner.
‘Every time I stay in Champex I unwind quickly from the stress of city life in London. The air is so clear & sweet - I sleep so well. I just love the views and the mountains with so much to do. I can never get bored here and I just love the apartment. You have put your heart and soul into it’. Miss VP from London
‘Champex is a truly special place with stunning scenery. I really enjoyed the ski touring and I will certainly come again. Since returning to work, I feel so refreshed and haven't stopped talking about the holiday’ Mr PM from London
‘This was our 1st time in Switzerland so we didn't know what to expect. We arrived at night & found the apartment both warm & welcoming. When we woke up in the morning we were stunned by the scenery. We loved Champex & especially the thermal baths at Saillon!’. Mr & Mrs A - Jersey
Thank you for your help and a lovely stay in the apartment. The three best things about our holiday were the thermal baths, the walking and the apartment and yes we would definitely recommend your apartment. Miss EM - London.
'We enjoyed the hiking at Champex. Our kids loved the boats on the lake -- both the paddle boats and the row boats. Marney and I both run and we loved running the trails and we also enjoyed using the vita par cours around the lake. We could have easily spent two weeks at your place and sometimes regret that we didn't do so. We can see why you love it so much'. Mr & Mrs Mac - Canada.
'We had a great time motor bike touring in the region - it was great to have a mechanic opposite the apartment. We would definitely return and recommend Champex and your apartment.' Mr & Mrs B - Wales.
