Home description
Champex-Lac - an idyllic and tranquil retreat high up in the Swiss mountains.
Our beautiful holiday home "Le Grand Combin" is situated on the edge of a beautiful lake - it was originally a Victorian hotel and in 2007 was totally refurbished to provide just 8 apartments. Our spacious apartment of 137 sq.m. is on the first floor. It has 3 balconies and magnificent views over the lake and mountains. There is garage parking with a direct link into the building and the apartment is accessed by both lift and stairs. Crowd-free skiing in the winter and for the summer Champex-Lac is at the centre of a network of walks with activities available on the lake and heated pool.

The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
The Canton of Valais lies in the South-West of Switzerland, stretching for 150 km along the narrow ribbon of the Rhône Valley between Lake Geneva and the Rhône Glacier. The wide range of holiday destinations in Valais reflects the diversity of its landscape, of its flora and fauna and of its culture. The repertoire is endless and includes fashionable sports resorts, a water paradise for children, a number of golf courses with the nearest being at Verbier and Sion, thermal baths at Saillon and Ovronnaz and a haven for summer and winter hikers.
Valais is a fascinating land of contrasts blessed with an exceptionally mild climate, where the number of sunny days per year is well above the national average.
Champex Lac area
General information on Champex-Lac can be found on the web site "www.champex.info" and if you click on the photo gallery you will find over 50 photographs covering both winter skiing and summer seasons.
Champex-Lac is situated close to the borders with both Italy and France and is the setting for widely differing sporting activities in a lush green landscape. In the summer Champex-Lac offers boating and fishing on the lake, a "parcoursvita" fitness trail, horse-riding, tennis, cycling, swimming in either the lake or heated open-air swimming pool and an extensive range of walking trails or for the less energetic a gentle stroll on the beautiful walk around the lakeshore.
Due to its height (1500-2200m) Champex-Lac has a long ski season. It is a charming crowd-free resort with 15km of piste together with challenging offpiste and tree skiing, 4 lifts including a nursery slope and a further 30km of cross country routes. There is a branch of the Swiss Snowsports School (SSS). In addition there is ice skating, a beautiful long sledge run and an ice tower to climb.
A number of walks are kept open through the snow in the winter, while those wanting to venture further on foot can try snowshoe walking (raquette).
For a change you can ski at Verbier which takes approximately 30 minutes to drive, or to beat the morning lift queue you can take the bubble lift from Le Chable just 25 minutes drive away. Also within 30 minutes driving are small ski stations at La Fouly, Super St Bernard, Vicheres-Bavon and Bruson and all offer a good days sking.
The chairlift is open for most of the year and is 2 minutes drive by car where there is an ample free car park. Alternatively you can use the Saint-Bernard Express - the bus stop is directly outside "Le Grand Combin".
During the summer the lake is the focal point of the village. Boats are available to hire and there is fishing too. Or you may simply want to sit in a local bar or café beside the lake and soak up some mountain sunshine.
Champex-Lac is at the centre of a network of walks, from gentle downhill strolls to major Alpine touring routes and glacier walking.
Those wanting a more relaxed holiday can enjoy a glass of wine looking over the tranquil lake, take a pedalo across it, or explore the village's fascinating Alpine Botanic Garden.
Champex-Lac has an amazing number of restaurants and cafes for its size, 2 boulangeries, a supermarket and other shops including a ski and walking shop where you can hire ski equipment.
The village makes an excellent starting point for exploring the region by public transport or car. The other villages of the Pays du Saint-Bernard are close by. In the local town of Martigny, you will find the Fondation Pierre Gianadda (an art gallery of international reputation), various examples of Roman architecture (including an amphitheatre), and several medieval buildings, notably the town castle. To the very south of Valais is the Grand-St-Bernard Pass, only open during the summer months, where there is a museum which documents the history of the most ancient Pass through the Western Alps and where you can meet with the famous St Bernard dogs and puppies which are still bred there. Continue on into Aosta in Italy for lunch or a drink on the Piazza or browse the varied and plentiful shops.
