The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Chamonix is the perfect holiday destination for any season! You'll be surprised at the size of this alpine mountain town and the amount it has to offer you. Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc in the heart of the French Alps, displaying glaciers and breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains all around.
The skiing in Chamonix has a reputation for steep unforgiving runs, and there is enough on-piste challenge to provide a work-out for even the most advanced skiers. There is also plenty of skiing for the intermediate skier, enormous off-piste potential and some of the best ski touring in the world.
Historic Chamonix is a cosmopolitan town full of life and incredible scenery. In addition to the Ski season for which it is famous, there are hundreds of shops, countless restaurants, bars, clubs and a casino. There is also the sports centre with indoor and outdoor pools, ice rink, rock climbing, paragliding, water rafting, mountain bike trails and an 18 hole golf course. There's always plenty to do for the children too. Chamonix also has a the highest cable car in Europe to take you to the top of Mont Blanc and the Montenvers train to visit the Sea of Ice glacier and ice grotto. Plus cinema, Alpine Museum and a local market on Saturday morning - selling a wide range of local produce.
With a huge range of on and off mountain activities, there is something for everyone throughout the year. Chamonix is a place you'll want to come back to time and time again!
Chamonix / Le Tour area
Le Tour has some of the best off -piste skiing in Chamonix, and also is the location of the largest beginners ski slope in Chamonix.
There are a number of good bars and restaurants within walking distance of the chalet as well.
In summer: Aside from the incredible views you'll wake up to each morning, the chalet offers some of the best walking and mountain biking trails right from the doorstep:
Walking from the Chalet Take the local Charamillon lift to the summit where you will find paths leading through alpine pastures offering superb views of the Chamonix valley, the Mont Blanc range, the Aiguilles Rouges mountains and Switzerland. Take a picnic and a bottle of wine for a wonderful lunch in the sunshine or trek up to the Albert 1er refuge hut and have lunch there - Tarte Myrtilles highly recommended. You can also stay overnight if you like, but make sure you book as it is popular amongst climber and glacier hikers (Tel. +33 (0) 4 50 54 14.36).
Mountain Biking from the Chalet We can arrange mountain bike hire for you and you can take your bikes on the local Charamillon telecabine from Le Tour. There are 1 hour easy riding trails, intermediate trails taking you through the National Reserve Park and even to La Jeux in Switzerland, with a long fast downhill to get the heart racing. Don't forget your passport !!!
In winter: With 11 blue runs, 9 red runs and 1 black, and lots of great off piste over the back of the Col de Balme Telecabine down into Vallorcine.
Great for Beginners: Just a snowballs throw away from the chalet you have access to the beginner slopes of Le Vormaine at the foot of Le Tour, which are the largest slopes in the valley for beginners. These are great for gaining confidence and progressing quickly and are also a great spot for taking the kids out sledging.
Great for intermediates, snowboarders and off-pisters: For the more experienced skier or boarder Le Tour is loved because of the large areas of renowned off piste which run all the way down to Vallorcine. Get up early on a powder day and you are guaranteed fresh tracks all the way down to the bottom!
If you are ski touring, you can get from the Grands Montets by traversing the Argentiere glacier back to the chalet. You climb the the Col de Chardonnet, over the top and ski down next to the Le Tour glacier (a mountain guide is recommended).
The ski bus also runs regularly from Le Tour to other ski areas within the Chamonix valley including the famous Grand Montet ski lifts in Argentiere just 5 mins drive by car or ski bus.
