It also has a double sofa bed giving you the option of a fifth bedroom if you want the chalet to sleep 10 people. The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Chamonix is probably best known as the skiing and alpine capital of the world. As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), peace and quiet, great nightlife, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you. Chamonix is the perfect place to come for a weekend break or a week's holiday. In fact there is so much to do out here many people decide not to go back! The town is at the foot of Mont-Blanc and following introduction of skiing in the early 1900s Chamonix hosted the first winter Olympic Games in 1924.
Chamonix / Les Houches area
Les Houches is the regular venue for Chamonix World Cup Downhill but is in fact well suited to families, beginners and intermediates, with easy runs at the top of the mountain. The 70 kilometres of almost entirely wooded slopes form the biggest single area of prepared runs in the Chamonix valley. The slopes are normally quiet and the views superb from the several attractive mountain restaurants. For the more daring the resort possesses 3 ski jumps. Chamonix is best known for its extreme skiing, climbing and mountain biking. This busy activity mecca is popular most of the year round with tourists clambering for a glimpse of Mont Blanc. There are fabulous walking trails all over the valley. The climbing is spectacular with the highlight being the annual world championchips in July. Mountain bicking is very popular and the golf course here is very high standard with excellent facilities. The walking and running trails are world famous with the ultimate 'Ultra Trail' - of 154km which is known as Le tour du Mont blanc (5+ day walking trip) taking place in August. During the summer the alpine rivers swell from the mountain snow and the white water activites really come into their own. Chamonix as all the facilities of a town, with cinema, sports centre, ice skating, tennis squash and a very good 18 hole golf course. Chamonix provides skiing for all abilities with nursery slopes at Les Planards and Les Chosalets, however it is ideal for the intermediate and advanced skier. The intermediate runs will provide excellent groomed pistes, trails and mogul fields. For the expert skier there is limitless off piste skiing and some of the steepest and most challenging runs in the Alps including the awe-inspiring run down the Vallee Blanche with mountain guide. The apartment is located within a minute or two walk from the nursury slopes, and main bubble cable car, at Brévent. Skiing Information The apartment is located within a minute or two walk from the nursury slopes, and main bubble cable car, at Brévent. The skiing in the Chamonix Valley is spread over 5 separate areas which are linked by a regular and efficient bus service included in the lift pass. At the base of the Valley is Les Houches, with Brévent close to Chamonix centre, in turn linked to La Flégère. Up the Valley is Les Grands Montets at Argentière and finally Le Tour. As the Valley cuts through the highest mountains in Europe, the skiing in Chamonix has a reputation for being among the best available. This reputation is built on the fact that Chamonix Mont Blanc has the world's biggest skiable vertical drop that is served by lifts (2807m). It also boasts one of the world's longest runs - 22 km through the Vallée Blanche - and staged the World's first Winter Olympics in 1924. People have been skiing here since 1893 and one of the first cable cars in the world opened in 1907.
How to get there
Geneva airport is no more than an hour away, door to door. We can recommend and help you book transfers that will take you directly to the chalet, which offer discounts for groups of 4 or more. The chalet is a 5 min walk into the town centre, where you can take free buses to the various lift stations in Les Houches (no more than a couple of minutes), or to Chamonix and Argentiere. As you have car parking, it may be worth your while hiring a vehicle for your holiday, giving you freedom to go anywhere and be on the lifts within a matter of minutes after leaving the chalet. Useful hint, when booking a hire car, make sure your pick up point is from the Swiss side as opposed to the French side, it makes travel so much easier, as you have to pay to travel on Swiss motorways. Driving from Calais takes on average 8 hours, 550miles/850km.
