The Rhone/French Alps region

Chamonix is a long-established, year-round alpine town and the most popular access point for skiing and mountaineering in the Mont Blanc range.

On either side of the centre and within walking distance are the base stations of the cable car to the Aiguille du Midi, for the famous Vallée Blanche glacier run, and a gondola to Le Brévent. A third high-altitude area, La Flégère, is reached by cable car from the nearby village of Les Praz. There are then three other major ski and hiking areas. At the top of the valley are the villages of Le Tour, at the foot of the Balme slopes (with an alternative base at Vallorcine), and Argentière, beneath the Grands Montets - among of the most celebrated sloes in the Alps.

Further down the valley and a short car, bus or train ride is Les Houches. Regular free ski-buses link all ski areas and there are also hourly trains (free with a guest card) to Argentière, Vallorcine and Les Houches.

The Unlimited lift pass covers not only Les Houches but also Verbier in Switzerland and Courmayeur in Italy. There are free shuttle buses through the Mont-Blanc tunnel several times daily to Courmayeur but having a car is useful to explore these Italian and Swiss resorts makes skiing in Verbier a more practical proposition.

Chamoinix has been described as "the Beach on ice" and whether you come here to climb Mont Blanc, ski the best off-piste areas in Europe or just soak in the charm and atmosphere of this unique town by drinking a beer or an espresso in one of its historic squares, there is something for everyone here.

Activities include, Canyoning, Canoeing, White-Water Rafting, Paragliding ('Parapenting' in French), Glacier Walking, Mountaineering and Hiking, Heli-Skiing, Hydrospeeding, Golf, Paintball, Archery, Panoramic Helicopter Tours, Rock Climbing, Flying over the Summit of Mont Blanc, Horse Riding, Hot Air Balooning, Tennis & Squash, and Via Ferrata.

For things to do in summer in Chamonix see

Christmas and New Year - The festive season Chamonix is a special time. A guaranteed white Christmas - with plenty of sking combined with a glass of champagne, vin chaud (mulled wine), carols and fireworks. By New Years Eve most bars and restaurants hold their parties or special menus and by midnight locals and tourists head the centre of town for the big countdown – not an official event as such, more of a long-held tradition. On the stroke of midnight you are advised to duck as champagne corks and fireworks are unleashed in celebration!

January - The Swatch Ski and Snowboard Freeride World Tour from the 26th January to 1st February brings the worlds best skiers and boarders to Chamonix.

February - Les Houches in the Chamonix valley is home to Le Kandahar World Cup Downhill Ski Championships. The race is a superb spectacle and has become one of the main sporting events in the Chamonix valley.

June - The Marathon du Mont Blanc covers 42kms and ascends over 1000 metres and attracts thousands of competitors and spectators.

The Fête de la Musique takes place every summer solstice on 21st June in cities, towns and villages across France. The Chamonix Fête de la Musique is a free event that spills out from the bars and restaurants onto the streets and encompasses all types of music.

July - The Tour de France comes to Chamonix with some of the most gruelling mountain climbs of the most famous road race in the world.

In the last week of July the Cosmo Jazz Festival is a popular and free festival with concerts set in some of Chamonix's most amazing locations including the top of the Aiguille du Midi, Lac Blanc and Grand Montets.

August - The North Face Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc begins and ends in Chamonix covering a total of 166kms, 3 countries, 7 valleys, 71 glaciers and 400 summits, with a difference in altitude of 9400 metres. Athletes and spectators soak in the atmosphere of the town with concerts, barbecues and other associated events.

"Best accommodation in the whole valley"

Just returned for the second time to this apartment but for the first time to Le Majestic in the winter. Being Chamonix regulars I have to say that this is some of the best accommodation in the whole … More

"Superbly located stunning apartment"

We stayed in the apartment for a long weekend and couldn't recommend it highly enough to stay in as a base for enjoying the amazing skiing area both in and around Chamonix. In addition, it is located so near to the town centre, that everything is so close by, making it easy to explore the town and all that it has to offer, both in the day and night.

The apartment itself has been decorated to an excellent standard and the interior design has clearly been really well thought through. It is fully equipped so you can be completely self-catering, although you would miss out on the experience of some wonderful nearby restaurants if you did!

All in all, if you are looking for a place to stay in Chamonix that is centrally located, is of a high standard and has wonderful views, this is definitely the place to stay.

"Wonderful apartment in a great location"

The apartment was everything we thought it would be. Located in a wonderful building in a great location. Town centre was only a 5min walk. Access to ski slopes was quick and easy. The apartment was well appointed and tastefully furnished. Communication with the owner was excellent, all our queries were answered promptly, and the rates for the rental were quite reasonable considering the location and time of year. The staff at Chamonix All Year were very helpful and knowledgeable (even went out of there way to assist with a sick traveler). Only negative about the apartment was the lack of TV to watch (TV/DVD was present, but unable to be tuned to any television channels). This was brought to the attention of the owner, so may be rectified in the future. A HDMI cable was provided so a laptop could be used to watch any online material.
all in all, a very pleasant place to call home. Would recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the area.

"Contemporary accommodation in an historic building set in excellent location"

The apartment appeared to have been newly renovated and had everything we needed. The kitchen and dining area made it easy to stay in for the occasional meal (the fresh produce available in the town was excellent). The living area was light and had lovely views with a balcony so we had somewhere to enjoy our local wine. Everything was comfortable and clean - my wife thought it was a real home from home. The property had free parking but we did not use the car around the town as the apartment was so close to all the restaurants, bakeries and cheese and wine shops. We bought a three day lift pass which seemed a bit expensive but was much cheaper than buying individual passes. We went on cable cars, tramway and rack railway all included in pass. There were really nice walks up in the mountains which were well signposted - we did not get lost once! We mainly used the locals informal restaurant near the train station called Elevation 1904 - it was cheap and filling but there were lots of very nice restaurants all over town.
