The Rhone/French Alps region

Best Skiing & Climbing Area in Europe

Haute-Savoie has many ski-resorts and borders Switzerland and Italy. Geneva, an hour's drive from Chamonix, is host to several international organisations, an international airport, and several big trade shows including the Geneva Motor Show.

Haute-Savoie has the largest range of elevations of all the departments in France; the lowest point is 250 metres (820 ft) in the Rhone River Valley, and the highest Mont Blanc at 4,810 metres. The terrain of the department includes the Alpine Mont Blanc Range; the French Prealps of the Aravis Range, the Chablais, Bornes and Bauges Alps; and the peneplains of Genevois haut-savoyard and Albanais (known collectively as L'Avant-pays savoyard). Its mountainous terrain makes mountain passes important to trade and economic life. Some of the most important are the Col de la Forclaz (which connects Chamonix to the Canton of Valais) and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, linking Chamonix to Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley.

Chamonix

Chamonix Mont-Blanc is without doubt one of the better places in the world for skiing, the main activity during the winter season. This is one of the reasons why it was the first resort to host the Winter Olympic games in 1924.

Cham' is a destination popular the world over. In the streets of this high-mountain town you'll hear languages from every corner of the globe. But the people who come to this 'summit meeting' share the same way of thinking, the same love for mountaineering, its legends and its ethics.

When you're out shopping in the town centre, wherever you are look up and you'll see 'it' there… 4,810 metres (15,781 ft) of rock, snow, ice and dreams of things to come.

The city’s infrastructure allows for many other activities:

Alpine skiing / Cross-country skiing / Off-piste high-altitude skiing with a guide / Snowboarding / Iceskating / Indoor tennis / Rafting / Heliskiing / Mountaineering / Dog sleigh

Chamonix and its valley are dominated by the Mont Blanc chain to the south and the Aiguilles Rouges (red peaks) to the north.

The valley is of glacial origin and measures 17 km, from the Col des Montets at the northernmost point to the Taconnaz torrent. The town centre is situated at an altitude of 1035 metres, the highest village at the top of the valley is Le Tour (1462 metres).

The Arve, the main river of the upper Savoy, takes its source at the Col de Balme and flows a distance of 107 km through the Chamonix valley and on down to Geneva where it joins the Rhône.
